no sound with driver installed

i have installed windows vista on a del 4600 and it says no audio device
installes, after intalling realtek 97 32-bit it says it is working properly
but still no sound from any program. someone please help me

i had the same problem on a Dell dimension 4600, like you i installed the
latest realtek driver but nothing, the front headphone socket or from the
line out light green socket on the back of the machine

i then decided for whatever reason to try plugging the speakers into a
different sound output .
Guess what the surround sound black coded socket on the back was the only
one that worked .

Still nothing from the usual outputs though

Check what devices are standard out-/input in Control Panel > Hardware and
Sound > Sound.

Look in Sound and Volume Mixer for settings that need fixed. Wrong sound
device selected? Maybe you have headphones selected, something muted in
mixer, etc.
