No Sound in PowerPoint File Sent to me

I received an email with a PowerPoint attachment. On my work computer the
Christmas carol in the ppt file plays. On my home computer, no audio plays in
PowerPoint. I opened up the main volume control in the Control Panel and made
sure everything except Mic was unchecked in "Playback" and every volume
control turned up to max. I played Real Player and WMP files, all had sound.
No sound in PowerPoint. I looked in PowerPoint help and got answers for
everything except what I was looking for. Any ideas on what I need to do?
Thanks for your help.

Was the office email from someone on the same network as yourself?

Hello Michael,

Thank you for your response. I received an email from a friend in Ecuador
who forwarded a joke to me as a PowerPoint attachment. I opened it on my work
computer, which has the full version of Office 2007, including Access 2007.
My work computer runs XP Pro. When I got home, I opened the email and its
attachment on my XP Home SP3 computer. I could manoeuvre through the slides,
but the Sileny Night carol would not play. Nothing I did would make it play.
Interestingly, on my Vista laptop I could hear the audio, but not move beyond
the first slide. PowerPoint is not as easy as application to use as I would
like, but it's all I've got. Thank you for your suggestions.

Looks like you tried it on 2 different computers at home. What version of
PowerPoint are you using on those computers? It sounds like the music file
is a .WAV file as it seems to be embedded into your presentation which
should play on all computers.

Hello Michael,

In fact, I've tried the PPS attachment on three computers, the office, the
laptop and the home desktop. The laptop and the desktop are running the exact
same version ofOffice 2007 Home and Student, the only difference being the
O/S on the laptop. There is some setting somewhere i suppose on my desktop
which is prohibiting me hearing the presumed .wav file and something on the
laptop preventing me from moving through the sequence links inside the pps
presentation. Thanks for whatever ideas you might have.

On your XP system, you should have on the task bar a Volume Control icon
Right click it and select Open. If you don't have the task bar icon, then go
to control Panel, select Sounds and Audio Devices, on the Volume tab, click
on advanced, and make sure that nothing is check marked as being mute.

Hello Michael,

I opened up the speaker icon in the System Tray and unchecked Microphone.
Then I went into every advanced tab showing an dmade sure there were no
checks anywhere (there weren't). That produced a loud squeal of feedback
until I cut the switch on the mic itself off. I opened the PowerPoint
attachment, but still no audio. What the setting is that I'm missing hasn't
been found yet!

I would go here as my next step http://www.playsforcertain.com/ although not
free, there is a free trial period

If you want to send me a copy of the presentation just to see if it works on
my machine just send it to (e-mail address removed) using the same subject line.

Hello Michael,

Well, I downloaded the playforcertain application-non-pro version-and
installed it. So far it hasn't resolved the problem, so I won't have to pay
$70 U.S. in 14 days.

Is it possible that there is a corrupted file in PowerPoint and that if I
reinstall it or do a repair it will fix the problem? And why does the same
exact software play the embedded .wav file on my Vista laptop but the links
within the PowerPoint won't work on the laptop, but will on the XP desktop?
If I could merge the laptop PowerPoint with the desktop PowerPoint, then I'd
have the links function in the laptop and the audio function on the desktop.

If you like challenges, I think this is one.

Charlie;

Thanks for taking the time to send the presentation. It worked perfectly on
my XP SP3 Office 2007 machine. Looks like it has something to do with your
settings on your two home machines. You could do a repair on your two home
systems to see if it clears up the problem. The sound file is embedded in
your presentation and there are no links required to make it play that I am
aware of. I'm running out of guesses.

Two more things to try:

1. Save the PowerPoint file to a folder with a very short path name, e.g.
C:\test.

2. Save the PowerPoint file as a website, file type html (not .mht). This
will create a folder of the same name, you will find the wav file there. Try
playing it separately.

Best regards,
Ute
