How are you trying to reboot? I.e., do you go to the Start menu first or
use cntl-alt-del from the keyboard?

After getting download and installing it prompted me to
reboot. So I did and it never rebooted since. Keeps
cycling to start up screen.

This is not a totally uncommon problem. Unfortunately,
the only solution I have found that works is to set your
computer to boot from the CD-ROM drive, put in your
Windows XP or XP SP1 CD, and do a reinstall of the
operating system. Doing a repair doesn't work. Just
remember NOT to install the operating system in a new
folder or you'll have to reinstall all of your application
software, too.

My problem may be the same. I downloaded SP2 > The first boot up
_appeared_ to go okay, ZA started, AVG started too, but IE wouldn't
start nor would anything else I tired. I could ping yahoo.com form the
cmd prompt, though. I couldn't start msconfig at first, but then after
restarting, I could. System restore didn't start at first, but later it
did. I tried the restore point before SP2 > blue screen almost as
described above > repair install from CD> still doesn't work. I'm
running off an old HD now.

So you say I have to reinstall Win XP? Won't that eliminate SP2 (and SP1
as well)? Will all the non-system files still be there?

If all you have done is "downloaded" sp2, then the service pack is not
the problem. Downloading a file does nothing to your system except
placing it in the folder of your choice for a later action.

Now, if you INSTALLED SP2 after downloading it, well that's another
ball of wax.

Yes, the terminology is important. It's not nitpicking. I deal with
people every day who screw up their terminology, often times resulting
in a trip to the actual computer when, if the person had used correct
terminology, the problem could have easily been fixed over the phone.

Hope you did a backup before applying SP2, and save it somewhere on removable media.

Did you disable AVG & any other startup apps before applying SP2?

You can remove SP2 by going to Control Panel Add/Remove Programs & select "Windows XP Service Pack 2" & Remove.
Here again, close & disable AV & user startups.

No I didn't do a backup, but I didn't lose any data either. I have a
working pre-SP2 15 GB HD that I'm running off now. I have the failed 120
GB HD (the one I tired to install SP2 on) hooked up as a slave, and I
can see everything.

No. I had that and ZoneAlarm running.

That's if you can boot up and get to the Control Panel . On the first
boot up, I couldn't get Task Manager, or anything else to run (described
above).

On the third bood, I got TM to run; I then did a system restore...and so
on. I'm tired of telling it. All that past stuff doesn't really matter.
I'm trying to get things going _now_.

As I said, I can now see everything on the problem drive. I'm suspicious
of the boot.ini .

In the working drive, This is it:
[boot loader]
timeout=30
default=multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS
[operating systems]
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS="Microsoft Windows XP Home
Edition" /fastdetect

[operating systems]
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS="Microsoft Windows XP Home
Edition" /fastdetect /noexecute=optin

Notice the last line. What's going on?

It's in the past, agreed, and not trying to be preachy ---- disable Antivirus when applying any service pack.

To answer your last, that entry in boot.ini is normal and is the standard default . I have it on my system as well.
This is part of the security features in service pack 2.
