no message; no update

2 PC's; desk top & lap top; both previously running MS Antispyware. Both
machines offerred upgrade to Windows Defender (accepted on both). Upgrade was
installed and updated perfecty. Lap top installed Defender but fails to
update despite all suggested remedies. No error messages or notices (such as
"Windows Defender definitions haven’t been updated")
Conclusion = I have no idea

Thanks Tom, but that is just one of the "remedies" mentioned on this forum
that I tried (numerous times) .... without success

What do you know about the history of this laptop? It's possible that group
policy settings are locking AutoUpdate into a corporate server which is
either unreachable, or does not carry Windows Defender definitions.

If you can try an update via help, about, check for updates. and then
extract just the entries related to that attempr from
\windows\windowsupdate.log--and post those, we may be able to tell what's
going on.

I'm assuming that you have been to Windows Update and done an express scan
and applied all offered updates.

Thanks much for the speedy reply.
I've had the machine since new, used only as a stand alone till recently
when I networked it with the desk top previous mentioned in my original post
(which installed and updated Defender flawlessley)
When i attemp a manual update (either from the Defender home page or via
help, about, check for updates) the 'update button' seems to grafically
depress, but nothing at all seems to occur. The 'update button' comes back to
'undepressed', the help, about, check 'update button' stays 'depressed' but
again, nothing happens.
Windows\windowsupdate.log confirms ( lacks any info at all) that nothing
happens.
Thanks for the excellent suggestions and attempts to help nevertheless.

and yes, I've been to windows update several times and the machine has all
offerred updates

OK - how does the bottom of the home page in Windows Defender read--are you
still on 1.0.0?

Or have you gotten up to date manually via Windows Update?

What should happen on pressing Check for updates, is a balloon notification
demarking the start of checking for updates. At the end of the check, which
takes a little time--a second balloon notification should come up giving the
result--either an error, no updates found, or an update found and installed.

I take it you are getting no balloons at all--which makes me wonder whether
this has been turned off on the machine.

When you say that a check of the windowsupdate log file confirms that
nothing happens on the check for updates--can you say more, or post the log
excerpt?

Yes Bill, still 1.0.0
no updates at all (again, despite all ways imaginable)
no ballons (or anything at all)
Windows Defender Opions set to check for updates prior to scanning; scan
functions 'normally'
the log shows absolutely no sign nor reference to Defender updates, zip,
blank, nada, as if no attempt was ever made to update

and yes, Automatic Updates is "On"

This sounds like WindowsUpdate is broken--either that, or the app isn't
properly installed in some oddball fashion--which I'm not sure I've ever
seen a confirmed case of.

So--you're telling me that when you visit Windows Update and do an express
scan, nothing is offered?

I thought we'd tried this one:

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/918355/en-us

But--can you check out the troubleshooter for Windows Update in step 3
there? You might be able to convince me otherwise, but it appears to me at
this point that Windows Update isn't working on this system, and thus you
are missing some prerequisite for the automatic definition updates. Windows
Installer 3.1 is one that comes to mind, but there are others as well.

I think I left out some of my reasoning there.

Windows Defender updates via AutoUpdate, within the program--i.e. when you
go to Help About, or any other time that the program itself initiates
updates.

Updates are ALSO availalble via Windows or Microsoft Update (or WSUS in a
managed network environment.) So--in your case, Windows Update, which you
have said is working fine--should have offered the updates.

Bill, I think I follow your reasoning. My own thoughts paralled yours and all
my attempts to resolve were exhausted before I started this thread. I even
did a system restore to a point before I upgraded to Defender, with the same
eventual (lack of) results; I'm still at a loss t explain it... I'll continue
to monitor the forum to see if anything pops up to provide any direction ..
thanks again for your help

So--what is it that makes you feel that Windows Update is functioning
properly?

For example, last Tuesday, there were several--2, perhaps 3 high priority
updates offered on XP systems via Windows Update. Did you see those on this
machine? Do they show in the windows Update history?

Yes Bill, I got those critical updates and i even took an 'optional' update
under 'custom installs' , all downloaded and installed fine... the whole
system seems fine except for the recent upgrade to Defender... in fact even
Defender seems fine; it's only update that won't work for me

Obviously, the problem must be somewhere in my laptop's settings, some
conflict somewhere, but I have pretty much the same set up on my desk top
which doesn't have an Defender update 'issues' . I have no clue at this point
other then hoping that developers come up with something to address problems
like minel I can't be the only one ???

Minor updates in case anyone is still researching this problem ~
1) I've found another thread in "Installation"
Definitions won't update 4/26/2006 from Susanna, who it seems has the same
problem
2) Even though Defender Installation seems to uninstall Antispyware, I
noticed remnents in C:\Programs and deleted them. This failed to solve the
problem however.

What happens if you use the MSI Cleanup Utility? It is something I do not
normally recommend because it can cause damage, but you indicate that you
have restore points set. Can you uninstall the signature set that way and
retry?

I have tried that already. I received todays automatic windows updates
without a problem and there was no hint of Defender even though I have made
every effort to remove it completely. I have 'scrubbed' my
registry,)(including use of CCleaner and MS safety Live) run full anti virus
and anti spyware scans and am now reluctant to even try to reinstall Defender
again in it's Beta form, albeit Defender runs and updates flawlessly on my
other (DeskTop) machine.

Re; your last suggestion... MSI Cleanup Utility did not 'see' the signature
set, only the Defender Program.. perhaps this is a clue to something.

Isn't this the expected result? You shouldn't be offered Defender
definitions, if it's been removed, surely?
