no logon server available

I have tried every trick I could find on this
site to network my Win2k laptop with my XP desktop,
but have not been able to get beyond the dreaded
"There are no logon servers available to service the
logon request" message.

My laptop is part of a domain at work, and my desktop is
part of a workgroup at home.

Please help!

Rather than trying to browse the machines, explicitly map a drive.
Select the option to "Connect using a different username."
Explicitly specify a local user account on the target machine like this:

other-pc-name\user-name

then provide the matching password.

By explicitly specifying a local account on the target machine in this way,
it ought to prevent the username being mistaken for a domain-name\user-name.
This should prevent it looking for a domain controller to validate the user
credentials.

When you start your laptop at home when you get to the
logon screen click the details button. In the dropdown
change the domain to this computer log on as a local user.
don,t forget to change back to the domain when you go back
to work
