no icons or start menu after sp2 update

I have xp pro. i ran windows update and installed sp2 on my computer. after
it installed, i rebooted my pc and instead of "Windows XP Professional" when
it starts, it simply says "Windows XP". Also when it goes to my desktop, I
have no icons and no start menu, just my desktop picture. I restart my
computer in safe mode and went under my administrator account, and was able
to get online to send this cry for help. Thanks in advance for your
assistance.

Yes I did try the Kellys Korner links. I downloaded and installed said files
appropriate to my situation with no result. The only alternative I had was
to uninstall sp2 from my system. My system bogged down to the point where
even getting task manager to open was a chore.
Maybe I should just buy a copy of Professional with SP2 already installed
