No hibernate option.

Believe me I have researched this.

Hopefully, I have missed something.

My problem is exactly described in the MS hotfix, 914028, I did call MS, I
did get the hot fix and installed it per directions.

Sadly, no joy.

I have seen a thread on changing a registry option, that when I followed the
entire thread did not seem to work. So, I have not made any registry change.
This had to do with deleting the hiberfil.sys file. I HAVE the hibernate
option under my power settings, when I uncheck the allow hibernate option,
the hiberfil.sys goes away. I check it and it comes back.

I have booted multiple times to no affect. I have had my system stable (no
upgrades or hardware additions) other than the standard security MS updates,
for quite some time.

Running XP SP2 with 2 gig memory. 85 gig free on primary HD.

Any assistance gratefully accepted.

OK, I wasn't having any issues with my display drivers but it never hurts to
be up todate.

I did this and there is no change. I still do not have the option to
hibernate when I do a start/shutdown.

The option is (and has been) available in my advanded power properties.

Any other possibles?

Thanks,

OK, here is the deal.

I "know" that when, it was working, if I did a start>shutdown I had four
options. And Hibernate was one.

I "know" that I never lost the Hibernate tab under my power advanced
options. This area always looked the same. I had the option to check
hibernate or not. Nothing here changed.

I had the option to “when I push this button†to go into hibernate. This
never changed. The only thing that changed was when I pushed the button, I
went into stand by.

I tried pushing the button last night, and instead of going into standby, I
went into hibernate.

I have no idea when this started, I was always looking for the option to
come up on my shutdown screen. That is STILL not there. I feel bad but not
too bad as this was the "clue" I was looking for that would tell me that I
could hibernate again.

Either it was the 914028 fix, or the driver fix or both.

I am sorta happy that I can hibernate, but wish, just for aesthetics if
nothing else, that hibernate was an option on my shutdown screen.

Thanks for the information that you have both provided me. I promise to try
to figure out more of what just happened here.

Thank you for your time and efforts on my behalf.

To cause the Hibernate button to appear after you click Turn Off Computer,
press the SHIFT key. When you press SHIFT, the Stand by button changes to
the Hibernate button.

When you click “Turn Off Computer†on the Start menu, the Hibernate button
does not appear in Windows XP Service Pack 2

Lord knows that if I knew it all I would not be coming here.

I do appreciate all of the help I get from you folk, in this case,
especially Carey Frisch.

I however, do have a however,

What has me confused, as stated earlier in my thread, was the loss of the
4th button in my start/shutdown.

The only thing I can say to Carey's “use the shift button to have the
standby change to hibernate†does work. Now.

I have another computer and it, like the one I was having problems with,
showed the hibernate button on the start/shutdown. XP Pro SP2.

http://www.butterflyfx.com/Junk/xp2.JPG

I do this not to refute, but to show why I remained confused for so long.

The problem is fixed. I am a cappy hamper and appreciate all of the
assistance I have received from this XP newsgroup. Again.

Thank you,

Skiph
