No Hard Drives seen on clean XP install

I'm trying to do a reformat/clean install of WIN XP Pro on an XP Home P4
Dell machine with two SATA hard drives (drive 0, drive 1) and 1.5 gig
memory.

I can boot from the Pro CD and install the initial setup stuff-- but then I
get an error message that there are no hard drives to be found on the system
and the install aborts.

The HDs work fine, show no errors in Device Manager, etc... so what's the
problem-- and how do I fix?

you probably need to load the drivers for your SATA controller
during the initial part of the installtion

If your drive controller is not natively supported then you'll want to boot
the Windows XP CD-Rom. Then *F6* very early and very important (at setup is
inspecting your system) in the setup to prevent drive controller detection,
and select S to specify additional drivers. Then later you'll be prompted to
insert the manufacturer supplied Windows XP driver for your drive controller
in drive "A"

If you wait and then S to specify additional drivers, then it may be too
late as Windows XP Setup at this point may have already assigned the
resources your drive's controller is wanting to use.

When you get to the point, delete the existing NTFS and or other partitions
found. After you delete the partition(s) abort the install, then again
restart the pc booting the CD-Rom or setup disks to avoid unexpected drive
letter assignments with your new install.

Be sure to apply SP2 or at least these two below to your new install before
connecting to any network.
