No Display Properties' on desktop

Since I had a replacement for my faulty LCD flat screen
monitor, I cannot right click and get the Display
Properties pop-up, have to go to Control Panel >
Display, but this means I cannot alter my desktop icons,
I have them as hidden, as a list on the tool bar, if I
wanted to change back to showing on desktop, cannot do
this. Can anyone help me, why this has happened, and to
be able to use this again. Its so much easier to right
click on desktop anyway.
