no desktop or blank desktop after logging on to windows xp

Hi all,

When I try to log on to win XP (SP1) I just have a blank screen with wall
paper only and no icons displayed, I tried this with different users, even as
administrator or in safe mode same situation. Cannot get in to desktop. I
tried renaming shdocvw.dll as suggested in MS KB 256194 and no luck.
Appreciate any help, I have to back bunch of files before I format the HD.

Try Ctrl-Alt-Del, see if explorer.exe is running, if not running then run it
as a new task, if it is then stop it then start it again (explorer.exe), then
do a Chkdsk!

I already ready tried that. Explorer.exe is not renning when i try running
that as new tast nothing coms up either
