No connection to the Internet is currently available

For the last few weeks, I've been occasionally seeing this message:
No connection to the Internet is currently available. To view Internet content that has been save on your computer, click Work Offline.

Click Try Again to attempt to connect.

The problem is that I have an "always on" connection and hitting "Try
Again" always connects. What would cause this to happen? I've had this same
broadband connection for about 3 years and haven't had any problems with it
before. Other computers on my small peer-to-peer network don't seem to get
the same errors.

I have a DSL connection and I'm behind a router. We use DHCP for both IP
and DNS. I have an Asus A7N8X motherboard with an onboard LAN port and XP,
sp1 installed. I've also made sure that there's no power management on the
LAN port.

Thanks for any help or ideas.

Do you have a firewall?

Yes, and that was the first thing I thought about. I use the most current
version of ZoneAlarm Pro. I tried disabling it, but it didn't seem to make
much of a difference.

Last night I tried uninstalling my network card (actually a built-in port
on my MB). Then I reinstalled it again. The problem hasn't occurred since
then... but, since it was only happening sporadically, I don't know if its
really fixed or not.

It just happened again, so it's not fixed. :-(

Sam, if it is happening sporadically and randomly, then the nic might be
bad. Since nics are so cheap, why not slap in a pci one and see if that
fixes things. I'm assuming your computer is virus and spyware-free, but
random problems like you describe are most often hardware-related.

Since my MB has two onboard LAN ports, I just enabled the other one and
switched my cable to the other port. We'll see what happens.

Servers fail and are often down for maintenance, that is
more likely your problem. Ask your ISP if they have any
alternate connections.
