Greetings Jeff,

Firstly, make sure both you and your contact have gone through the Audio (and Video) Tuning
Wizard in Messenger. To do so, open the main Messenger window, click the Tools menu, then
Audio Tuning Wizard, then go through the wizard to select and test your audio/video devices.

Then, both you and your contact should verify that the Windows XP Internet Connection
Firewall isn't on -- click Start, then click the Control Panel. If you're in category view
click Network and Internet connections then click Network Connections. Right click your
network/internet connection, then click Properties. Click the Advanced Tab, and verify that
the Internet Connection Firewall is unchecked. As well, if your contact is using some type
of third-party firewall (ZoneAlarm, Norton Internet Security, etc.) have them make sure that
Messenger is set to "Permit All", "Allow All" or "Medium" (ZoneAlarm).

If that's not the case, and if you or your contact are using a router (with UPnP support),
you may need to remove the current port forwardings. To do so, click Start, All Programs,
Accessories, Communications, Network Connections. Right-click the "Internet Gateway" (should
be under the Internet Gateway heading) and choose Properties. Choose the Settings button,
click each 'msmsgs' or 'msnmsgr' entry and then choose 'Delete' to each one. Then close
Messenger (right-click the Messenger icon, choose Exit), then restart Messenger.

Also, you and your contact might try turning off the QoS Packet Scheduler. To do so,
click Start, then click the Control Panel. If you're in category view click Network and
Internet connections then click Network Connections. Right click your network/internet
connection, then click Properties. Uncheck the QoS Packet Scheduler, then reboot and try
again.

Jonathan I have notice that audio and video both work with MSN Messenger
with WinXP firewall enabled. I know of three people using it with the
firewall enabled and they have no problems with there video and audio
connection through MSN Messenger.

hear me. How do I fix this problem?

Hi Gary,

Of course, the Internet Connection Firewall will automatically open the necessary ports for
audio/video, however in some cases this functionality can be broken and for troubleshooting
purposes, to narrow down the problem, its recommended to turn it off just to avoid that being
an issue.

Audio/video conversation troubleshooting is quite complicated, I'm simply trying to simply it
as much as possible, to get to the root of the problem.

Jonathan,

I posted the same problem last Friday, at that point I have tried only turning off the QoS Packet Scheduler, and that didn't solve the problem. After following your advice on this posting regarding the "Internet Gateway" and deleting each 'msmsgs' or 'msnmsgr' entry, it works but only once. Basically, I am able to talk to carry on my first conversation, Once I close and try to talk with some other contact, the problem is back and I can't hear but people can hear me. The solution is to go back and delete again all 'msmsgs' or 'msnmsgr' entries from the "Internet Gateway". Is there any way to solve this?

Thank you in advance,

Francisco

Jonathan,

Last Friday, I posted a message with same problem that Jeff has, and based on your response at that time, I turned off the QoS Packet Scheduler but that by itself didn't solve it. I followed the instructions on this message regarding the "Internet Gateway" and deleting each 'msmsgs' or 'msnmsgr' entry and it worked only once. In other words, I can hear and be heard only in the first conversation that I have. After hanging up my first conversation and starting another with another contact, the problem is there again. Same story, I can't hear but people can hear me. What I have to do is redo the deleting all 'msmsgs' or 'msnmsgr' entries, and then restart messenger. After that it works again on the first conversation. Is there any way to solve this?

Thank you in advance, so far you were really helpful,
Francisco

Hi Francisco,

Are you using MSN Messenger 6.x or Windows Messenger 4.x when you have to do this (or both)?
I do know others with this router and don't have this problem, have you upgraded to the
latest version of the Linksys firmware for the BEFW11S4?

Hi Jonathan

I am using MSN Messenger (have both installed). I prefer Windows Messenger since I use app sharing. I ended up installing MSN MEssenger because I thought that this audio problem was on Windows Messenger. I have already upgraded and still have the same problem. It is sort of random when it works, and if it works, it still does it once only... Any idea? Thank you agai

I meant that I already upgraded the firmware on my Linksys router. A brief description of what is going on now. As I said, I can have a voice conversation normally (both ends can be heard without any problems). Once I finish that conversation anc connect with another contact I can't hear. So, I tried 'Exit Messenger', go to 'Internet Gateway', delete all 'msmsgs' or 'msnmsgr' entries (I usually find two only). Then, sign on again on Messenger and try to have voice again with the second contact (the one that had failed) and it doesn't work. However, after that it works again with the first contact... I hope this description helps you better understand the situation. Thanks again

Francisco
