No audio device?!

G. Randy Brown

Hi all,
I can't figure out what's wrong no matter how much I bang my head against
the wall (that usually does it : )
Anyway since I removed and uninstalled the drivers for my Delta 1010 ( a pro
soundcard with ten I/O on a breakout box) my audio is whacko! First I tried
using the card on the MoBo and then 2 different PCI Cards (Creative Labs PCI
128). The error I usually get is "device is being used by another app"; in
Vegas (my video non-linear editor program ) it doesn't recognize my card at
all and want to select "modem 0" even though there is no modem installed and
"Control Panel/Sounds and Audio Devices " reports "No Audio Device" as well.
However if I uninstal the Creative drivers in Device Manager, reboot to
automatically re-install, everything works PERFECTLY! (until I reboot again
and then it's back to square one).
Please help, my head is killing me!
TIA,
Randy

Try booting in Safe Mode, go to device manager and remove ALL audio devices.
Install the sound card you want to use and reboot. XP should find the card
and install the drivers.

Thanks Steve, I'll try that but please remember XP has no problem installing
the drivers and it working perfectly until I reboot. After rebooting nothing
plays except for Windows Media Player ( I discovered recently).
Now, I've never started this machine in Safe Mode so I went to Help and
Support. It states:
"To start the computer in safe mode

1.. You should print these instructions before continuing. They will not
be available after you shut your computer down in step 2.
2.. Click Start, click Shut Down, and then, in the drop-down list, click
Shut down.
3.. In the Shut Down Windows dialog box, click Restart, and then click OK.
4.. When you see the message Please select the operating system to start,
press F8.
5.. Use the arrow keys to highlight the appropriate safe mode option, and
then press ENTER.
6.. If you have a dual-boot or multiple-boot system, choose... "
If they're referring to the "Start Menu" (in XP Pro), I have no "Shut Down",
I have "Turn off computer" and if I click "Shut Down" in that dialogue it
will simply shut down; same with restart.
Any suggestions?
Thanks again Steve,
Randy
