No audio after reloading Win 2000 and Office XP

I recently had my hard drive replaced and have reloaded Win 2000, Office XP,
etc. I noticed I wasn't getting any sound when playing internet news videos
(I do get the beeps and dings for hitting the wrong key, etc). The Show
Volume control is not on my taskbar. I checked the Audio settings in Control
Panel -- the preferred playback device shows "No playback devices", but there
are drivers and devices listed in the Hardware tab. The device status
properties for each of these drivers and devices say that "the device is
working properly". I clicked on the Troubleshoot button hoping to get some
help, but I get an Internet Explorer script error.

You clean installed win, but did you install your mobo.chipset drivers or
other hw drivers?
Do NOT use winupdate for drivers but hw manu.web sites only, or cd supplied
with hw/pc
