Nikon Coolscan LS30 can't install hardware WinXP or Win98SE

I just purchased a used Nikon Coolscan III LS30. I’ve tried to install
on a WinXP Sp2 machine and a Win98SE machine. Neither machine sees the
scanner (Plug & Play does not initiate). When I try to install the
hardware manually Windows rejects any .INF file I point it to (have
tried dozens of times). It says the info for my machine is not there.

On both machines I installed the SCSI host adapter that came with the
scanner and I downloaded and installed the current Nikon Scan
software version. The software seems to be working properly but I get
a message that no active device is found. Also, I tried Vuescan which
does not find the scanner either.
On the WinXP machine I downloaded and installed the necessary ASPI
layer.
I don't know what firmware version is currently in the scanner. I have
downloaded the latest firmware but have not tried to install since my
computers don't recognize the scanner yet and I assume they need to
be communicating in order to install the firmware. (Maybe I'm wrong
here?)
The scanner came with two scsi cables so have tried them both. The
scanner is the only device on this port and I have set the
termination to "On". The scanner powers up and makes usual
scanner types of starting noises.
Just can't get the machines to find or recognize the scanner so I can
install the hardware. BTW - Nikon site says the scanner is not
compatible with WinXP SP2 but IS compatible with Win98SE. But I have
read other posts by folks who have gotten the scanner to work on a XP
Sp2 machine.
Please help! Thanks in advance...

What about the driver for the SCSI card. Have you installed it?
The SCSI card should have its own driver. XP may have a built-in driver for
the SCSI card.
Then ASPI for Windows XP, you may not need it for Windows 98SE.
Then the Scanner TWAIN Software.

You also must have a Photo Editor application.

Just went through this same exercise with my Nikon Scanner LS4500AF.
Now it does fine with Windows XP.

If interested send me your Email address and I will send you the
information. You will need an Adaptec 2906 or 2930 card.

From the Fast Track Guide: "The ends of the SCSI chain must be terminated.
Your Nikon scanner has a switch to set termination if it is the last device
in your SCSI chain."

If that is set up correctly try going to Control Panel - System - Hardware
tab - and run the "Add Hardware Wizard".

While that's a nice offer - can't you post the information here instead so
others may benefit as well?

Yes I can but it might be considered lenghty.

Is this the same reason that my LS2000 wont work now that I have
upgraded to XP from 98. The Nikon site refers to checking the scanner
firmware and upgrading but how do I check the firmware and what is the
mechanism for upgrading firmware.
