Coolscan III on WinXP install problems

P

Peter Gordon

If there is a more appropriate newsgroup for this query, would
you please advise it.

I am running WinXp with SP2 on an Intel Pentium 4 computer which
is fitted with an Adaptec 2906 SCSI card. The device manager
indicates that it is working correctly. A Nikon Coolscan III (LS30)
is connected to it. The terminator is switched ON on the scanner.

I have downloaded the latest Nscan_312.zip file from the Nikon site.
When trying to install the scanner, I use \INF\LS2000\WinXP\NKscnXP.inf
file in the instillation wizard. Instead of coming back with a list
of scanners from which to select, a blank list is returned. The
LS2000 and the Coolscan III are in this file.

Has anybody managed to install a Coolscan III on an WinXP computer?
Is so, how?

Thanks

I had the same problem. Some advice can be found at

There are entries for Coolscan III installation and NikonScan installation
relevant to WinXP.
However I seem to remember (I no longer have the Coolscan III ) that there
was an additional problem with finding the location of LS30.inf
You say that it is contained in \INF\LS2000\WinXP\NKscnXP.inf . I found
that for some reason it was not in my version.
I ended up using \INF\LS2000\Win2000\NKscn2k.inf which did contain it. It
may sound a bit unorthodox but it all worked perfectly.

I did this with the Adaptec board and a Coolscan II. I left the
terminator off and it works like a charm.
BTW, Nikon says the Coolscan II won't work with XP S2. Works just fine
for me. Silverfast makes it even better.

Hello

You need to have a ASPI layer installed. Win XP does not have it.
You can get a ASPI from Adaptec. There is a utility called ASPICHK.exe
that will check for versions of the aspi layer.

Thanks Nick,

I installed the Win2000 inf files and it now works with the
much maligned Vuescan, but with Nikon Scan I get a
"No active imaging device found" message. I've scanned a few
slides and some print film and it is working reliably, so am
happy with this.

Cheers,

Peter
