news-server access

Can't connect to my ISP's news-server ( news-server.welho.com ) . It only
says "502. You have no permission to talk. Goodbye"
This functioned well until 6/18 but not since. I don't remember doing
anything to the machine at that time, but haven't got it working despite 2
Win98SE re-install and this XP that I'm using now. The ISP helpdesk says it
is configuration problem on my machine, as it works as it should for them.
But I don't know what to check, because 3 other news-servers works as they
should. It isn't a matter of program either, as the same problem comes up
with IE6, SBnews and Forté Agent .....

Any ideas??

TIA

Hi, Thomas -

The 502 error essentially means "permission denied" - the
error is being sent by the news server so you're talking
to it just fine - it just won't let you in. There are a
couple of things you can look at:

First is an authentication error. If the news server
requires a username and password and doesn't receive
valid credentials it'll throw this error back at you.
Chances are both the username and password are case-
sensitive. Sometimes if you have your client software
set to send a username and password and the news server
doesn't require one you'll also get this error.

Another is if the news server is doing IP-based
authentication and you're not logging onto the server
from an authorized network. Some ISPs deny access to
their news servers if you're connecting *from* a network
other than their own.

The bottom line is that you're talking to the news server
just fine, Thomas - it's just denying you access. That
access is either based on an IP address or a username and
password. I think that's where I'd look.

Hope this helps a little -

I had this big-time with my old ISP.
This is an ISP news server configuration issue.

You are connected to the 'net using the same ISP, aren't you?

They have configured the news server so only their customers can use it.
But the authentication was broken.
They were coy about how the authentication worked, but we ( the customers )
figured that it was based on the user's IP address, and reverse DNS on that
IP address, and grepping for the ISP's name in the reverse lookup.
In our case, reverse DNS was broken.

Essentially, I suspect the IP address they have assigned you or reverse DNS
on
that IP does not match the permissions set up on the news server.

Hassle your ISP some more.

How does one do reverse DNS?
(HTV does still not believe there's an error on their mail-server)

Thanks, it works now. It didn't work yesterday, but then I gor another
address from HTV (62.78.185.142) . With this new address (62.78.232.163) it
works OK...

Wonder if they changed something (expect the address I receive) but didn't
tell me??

Anyway, thanks...
(And yes, I did send this message chain to them in total)...
