News Group servers

Sorry, I know this is off topic but I need suggestions.

My ISP is deleting this and most groups from their news service. What
choices do I have for a replacement News Service. Obviously FREE is
preferred, but a good service is more important.

Thanks,

This group is on msnews.microsoft.com, so it won't be affected.
If you are on Roadrunner, this is what they say...

"I cannot access Road Runner Newsgroups or download articles?
As of June 23, 2008, Road Runner will no longer offer Newsgroups, however
users can subscribe on their own to third party News providers.

Why is Road Runner discontinuing their own Newsgroups service?
Due to low subscriber usage Road Runner has decided to discontinue
Newsgroups service as of June 23, 2008.

If I still want a news service, what can I do?
Subscribers can choose to use a third party service and purchase on their
own through that service. There are many providers with offerings, as an
example here are several providers:

* Easynews
* Newshosting
* UsenetServer

When is the last day that Road Runner Newsgroups service will be available?
Newsgroups service will cease on June 23, 2008. "

Thanks Nonny, I've got motzarella up and running. It seems to only
have about half of the groups of my old news server, but I'll check it
out in more detail. It should be OK.

Several major ISPs are using a recent FCC (or some guvvmint agency)
ruling that they need to control the posting of child porn or be
liable.

Since operating a news server isn't a money-making operation - and
also has limited appeal to most of their userbase - those that are
cancelling are glad that they now have such an excuse.

These groups are available through msnews.microsoft.com. If you use a
Microsoft Communities compatible news reader, you then have access to the
Ratings button too. Don't just flame people, but "Rate this Post" as "Not
useful".

A free text-only server that many people use can be found here:

http://www.motzarella.org/

A free server that requires $5 "registration" but that also carries
binaries:

there are many servers out there, but to access the MS groups, you can do it
directly from the source.
the address for your newsreader should be msnews.microsoft.com for the NNTP
server.
That only does MS newsgroups, but it is probably the best for this group.

Flaming is SO much more fun!

Thanks,

aioe.org No binaries but pretty good and it hides your IP address. As a
side benefit, it automatically kill files Frank for you

I've used news.individual.net for several years - quite pleased. It is not
free, but the very modest fee is certainly worth it.

Thanks,

I've used free.teranews.com for some years and find it a good backup to my
ISP for non MS groups. It carries binary groups as well. There is a
reasonable daily d/l limit and these days there is a setup fee of around
$3.50 I think. No other costs.

Have a look at teranews.com for details.
