newly ghosted 80 gig ata will not boot without old drive connected

ok so i managed to do a great swap from a 20 to the new 80 gig on my friends comp and it all works great ... just a c drive...... so i went to GHOST my 40 gig to the factory new (exact same model as my friends )80 gig (SEAGATE ATA )..... i followed the source and destination . i do not think drive positions should have much to do with it as long as you are going from original to new . i have c,d,e,f drives in NTFS (as opposed to the previous successfull attempt which only had c drive) however so far cannot get the new 80 on mine to boot up xp properly. i always get to the blue xp screen and thats it . the previous ghosting on my friends is fine. the only way to get to the logon screen with the user accounts is to use the newly ghosted 80 in combination with the old 40.... it apparently will not boot up on its own... my drive jumpers are set correctly to the cable select position and the cables are correct ( they are not old ones). also my bios settings appear to be correct as well

.. ill check them again...... i have my 80 as master and 40 as slave. it would be nice to get the newly ghosted 80 to boot up on its own accord or at least get me to the damn logon screen ..... anything im missing? ill double-triple quadruple check my bios settings again...... i may have booted up right after with both drives together. will that have anything to do with my predicament? thanks in advance.... im tempted to chuck the thing and just buy a replacement. seems the easiest route although one can never learn anything if that is done THANKS!!!!!!!! OH YES WHEN TOGETHER BOTH DRIVES ARE SHOWING UP ON MY COMPUTER SO I KNOW THE GHOST WORKED (AT LEAST PARTIALLY)


so i looked at all bios settings . i tried the 80 as a master with the
jumpers set according to the seagate site for the ata drives ON ITS OWN AND
IT DOESNT GO INTO XP PAST THE BLUE INTRO SCREEN... the old 40 works fine by
itself and when combined as the slave with the 80 master they both work
great, although it appears that any data changes are being done to the new 80
master ., i noticed bookmarks and norton acting up so i redid some data entry
and made sure of my new bookmarks, these changes were done with both drives
combined and the old 40 slave didnt have any changes on it when i ran it by
itself... am i to assume that the new 80 is ok but needs the old 40 to boot
properly???? is the master boot record messed up or missing from the recently
ghosted new 80 gig? if so is this due to my stupidity by mistakenly starting
up the comp with both the drives at the same time right after the ghosting
process? do i simply need to redp the drive lettering on the drive partitions
to make the new 80 a C drive instead of a G drive or whaterever it has
become? HELP >>>>> lol thanks what a pain this is ...THANKYOU !!!!!!

The best way to do this is to ghost the new drive and then boot with only new drive. You do not
want Windows to see both drives on initial boot. Just reghost the drive and then boot with just new
drive.

Your still booting off of the 40 GB drive. ReGhost, shutdown, replace 40GB
with 80GB making sure jumpers are correct, bootup, activate windows, done.
