I am trying to install new microsoft update to protect
against "sasser". it keeps telling me "invalid product
key" and to contact microsoft about possible piracy.
what does that mean and how can I install these updates.
I bought the computer used from the computer repair shop
as "refurbished" and windows xp professional was already
on it. what do I do?

Apparently, the previous owner installed an unauthorized,
pirated, and illegal version of Windows XP Professional.

If you are getting the following error message when attempting to update to SP1:

Error Message: The Product Key Used to Install Windows Is Invalid

You'll have to purchase a new "Full Version" of Windows XP Professional
and perform a "Repair Install" using the new Windows XP Pro CD and Product Key
that comes with it. (You cannot simply change the Product Key)

I've evidently got the same problem. I've tried un-installing the last few updates I've done and also the fixes under article 328874 and nothing seems to work. My
registration number is not one of the numbers listed in the
"piracy" list" either. According to Microsoft's list, mine seems to be legal. I did, however, buy a "refurbished computer with xp professional already installed also. If anyone out there knows anything else regarding this, I'd be eternally grateful if you'd let me know and I will do the same.
