I think it's the server port number, but not sure what it should be. Her is
the error message I got.

The connection to the server has failed. Subject
'test', Account: 'mail.comcast.net', Server: 'smtp.comcast.net', Protocol:
SMTP, Port: 325, Secure(SSL): Yes, Socket Error: 10060, Error Number:

For your problem:
Change the Port number on the Advanced tab of your account from 325 to 587,
and remove the SSL Checkmark.

See point 10 onwards especially for your correct settings.

Would you be able to help me? I'm getting this message and I have tried
everything I can think of!! Please help, I appreciate it.

The connection to the server has failed. Subject 'Test', Account:
'France-Monaco-Rentals', Server: 'mail.france-monaco-rentals.com', Protocol:
SMTP, Port: 25, Secure(SSL): No, Socket Error: 10013, Error Number: 0x800CCC0E

You can NOT invent your own Server name. 'mail.france-monaco-rentals.com' is
not a valid name.
Talk to your ISP ( internet service provider ) and get the server names,
e-mail address, username, password, account settings etc .
They may even be able to lead you through the account set up process.
Or, if you tell us the last half of your e-mail address : what comes after
the symbol @ ?
e.g. mine is (e-mail address removed)

France-monaco-rentals.com is not your ISP. As such, your home ISP will block
your use of any port 25 SMTP server other than their own.
For an explanation of this policy, see
http://www.postcastserver.com/help/Port_25_Blocking.aspx

To send from home, you will have to substitute your home ISP's
SMTP server. If you need help with that, let us know who your
home ISP is.

Tried your suggestion. Here is the response:
The connection to the server has failed. Subject 'Re: RE:', Account:
'Altek', Server: 'mail.alteksystemsinc.com', Protocol: SMTP, Port: 587,
Secure(SSL): No, Socket Error: 10060, Error Number: 0x800CCC0E

"Tried your suggestion"?
The suggestion was tailored for a Comcast mail account, not your
alteksystemsinc mail account. Different mail servers require different
settings.

Web-hosted domains such as alteksystemsinc.com often have primitive
mail features, such as no SMTP service on a port other than 25.
Were you sending from home?

I was using port 25 which was the default port. My home isp is Verizon. I've
been using the connection for almost a year without a problem on my HP
laptop. I use Comcast as an isp at another home and don't change ports. I've
tried 25, 325, and 587. same result.

So, this latest error message happened while connected to the Internet
via Verizon? As explained here:
http://www.verizon.net/central/vzc.portal?_nfpb=true&_pageLabel=vzc_help_contentDisplay&objId=44427
Verizon recently began blocking port 25 connections to other (non-Verizon)
servers. Compared to the rest of the industry, they were very tardy in that
regard.

Port 587 or other non-25 ports won't work with mail.alteksystemsinc.com
because that server doesn't support them.

The following workaround should be successful when sending from home:

1. In Windows Mail go to Tools, Accounts, select your Altek mail account,
click Properties, Servers. Change the name of the outgoing (SMTP)
server to outgoing.verizon.net. Do not change the incoming server. Also,
make sure that the "My server requires authentication" option is checked.
Click the adjacent "Settings" button. Select "Log on using"
then enter your Verizon username and the associated password. Click OK.

2. Go to the Advanced tab and verify that the port number for the
outgoing (SMTP) server is still 587. Click OK. Try sending.

This setup may also work from your other home which has Comcast.

I have Verizon FiOS internet and I have a third-party email account that I
send using the server for that account. I use port 25 to send and I don't
have a static IP address as far as I know. Port 25 has been working for me,
but port 25 might be the problem for you. The Verizon document that Gary
referred to seems very clear that I need to use port 587 and I don't know
why port 25 is working for me.

Apparently Verizon is implementing this new policy gradually. Not all
Verizon users are affected at this time.
The same thing happened when Comcast began dropping support for
port 25. They did it piecemeal.

Likely explanation.

Those of us in California (and other west coast areas) with Verizon FiOS TV
was the last area in the USA to get a software fix for the DVRs. The
relevance to email is that consistent with what you said, the blocking of
port 25 might hit the west coast last.
