New WD hardrive freezes

W

WildWeasel

Hi,

I recently bought a new Western Digital 160GB Sata drive.
After twee weeks the hd went up in smoke... :-(
I received a replacement drive (the same one as i had) and it was
working perfectly...untill a few days ago.

The drive suddenly "freezes" from time to time, blocking my sytem for a
few moments. This is ofcourse very annoying!
The "freezing" is accompanied by a loud "clacking" noise.
I think the is best described like the old harddrives that went in
"parking" position , but then a few times louder.

What can be the problem with this harddrive?
I don't want to lose all my valuable data again!
Is there a solution or do i just have to change HD again? (probably
another brand next time)
Anyone ever had this problem before?

Thanks in advance,

Kris

That should tell you something.

It's going to the Zero position to then start a retry.

You probably have Power Supply problems that cause the drive to mal-
function, resulting in bad sectors that will be retried unsuccessfully.

Check your Power Supply and PS cabling to the drive.
Also check your drive's temperature.
Is there a solution or do i just have to change HD again?

HD is probably not to blame.
(probably another brand next time)

Only helps if it is less susceptible to low Power than your current.

Change power supply in your PC.

Its recalibrating when it cant read the data properly.
Thats what is causing the freeze too, trying bad data.

Surely you backed it up after the first failure ?
Is there a solution

Work out what is causing the drives to die.
Check the temperature using DTemp
http://private.peterlink.ru/tochinov/

If its not that, the power supply may be killing drives.

Post the SMART data using Everest from
http://members.iinet.net.au/~rod_speed/everesthome201.exe
or do i just have to change HD again?

Its unlikely that you have had two die by coincidence.

Yes, some systems do kill drives.

Could be overheating. Can it still be toiuched comfortably when
freezing?

Hi again,

Yesterday I bought a new power supply.
The problem seems to be solved!
Thanks for all your help!
