new to networking

I ordered DSL ( Westell VersaLink 327W from Verizon) only to find that the
software couldn't see my NIC in my old win98 pc. After spending the weekend
trying to correct I bought a new Dell running XP. The win98 system shows the
NIc, adapter, and now I got it to show an IP but haven't figured out
networking. I understand that on the new XP I can run the Network wizard and
then do "something" with that set up via disk to the old pc. My question
is.......if I end up still unsuccesful, will I be able to undo any network
configuring I do on the XP and get it back to where I started? Also, what
exactly do I do with that Network wizard disk? Not having a good W98 CD
might be causing me problems too, as I'm being promted for it. I've spent
days on this and the last thing I want to do is ruin my new pc.
Thanks for any help.

Ok, I'm halfway proud of myself. My 2 computers are talking to each other
and sharing a printer. However, STILL, when I run the DSL cd into the old pc
it says I need an interface card. I have that card wired to the router but I
don't know how to actually get online. Physically everything seems right. Do
I need to config that router somehow as shared thru the network? I though
tall I needed to do was wire the old pc to the router?
Thanks for the last reply.
