New security update (1/6/05)kills xp home computer-don't use!

Not sure where to put this thread but after using windows update this A.M. I
had to reboot with F8 key back to last good configuration.
Problem: After installing update and restarting computer I had no internet
access, could not open system folder, help window, security program, or other
misc system functions(no response, just clock and then nothing). The computer
was not frozen for many functions but most system functions would not work.
Tried a couple reboots to no avail. No other new software installed and
working fine just before security update install.
I will turn off updates for a week on all computers and see if it gets fixed.

I've had no problems whatsoever with the latest update!
Apparently, your PC had issues to begin with! Millions
of other Windows XP users have not had the isolated
issue you may have had.

When you downloaded and installed it was your anti virus auto scanner
enabled? If so, try it again with it disabled.

I will try with antivirus turned off later. To the MS responder about no
problems occurred with others:
1. Most people might not have another computer handy to send the message.
2. Even if they did have a computer, it is very hard for a common user to
figure out how to contact microsoft without long waits, messages about high
contact costs, and digging out CD's if they have them.
3. Millions might not know how to boot to last configuration. So how would
you know if they have a problem, since they have no internet access when
problem occurs.
4. Do not most people have virus scanner of some sort, if this is a problem
then MS should check it out.
5. Microsoft should have a message pop-up before every update telling users
what to do if they have a problem after an update just incase. This would be
good customer support.
Thanks for responses.

Sounds like you already had malware on the computer.

Look in the System log of Event Viewer at the time you failed to download
and install for Warning and Error Reports and post copies here.

You can access Event Viewer by selecting Start, Administrative Tools, and
Event Viewer. When researching the meaning of the error, information
regarding Event ID, Source and Description are important.

HOW TO: View and Manage Event Logs in Event Viewer in Windows XP
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;308427&sd=tech

Part of the Description of the error will include a link, which you should
double click for further information. You can copy using copy and paste.
Often the link will, however, say there is no further information.
http://go.microsoft.com/fw.link/events.asp
(Please note the hyperlink above is for illustration purposes only)

A tip for posting copies of Error Reports! Run Event Viewer and double click
on the error you want to copy. In the window, which appears is a button
resembling two pages. Double click the button and close Event Viewer. Now
start your message (email) and do a paste into the body of the message. This
will paste the info from the Event Viewer Error Report complete with links
into the message. Make sure this is the first paste after exiting from Event
Viewer.

Hope this helps.
