Updates caused crash

Menno Hershberger

I had a notice on my second computer today that updates were ready. I
clicked OK... there were 4 of them. Required a restart.
On the restart, it got into the Windows XP logo and then decided to reboot.
On that reboot I got the boot menu screen and I picked safe mode. It ran
down to "mup.sys" and hung. Rebooted again, picked normal mode. No go, it
rebooted again so I picked Last Know Good Configuration. OK, that worked.
This time after iy booted up it said I had two windows updates. One was for
IE 6 and the other was a security update. So I chose to install them and it
put me back in the same mess. So I have picked "custom install" and chosen
to skip those two updates. I've rebooted a couple of times now with no
problems.
Does this behavior sound familiar to anyone?

Try temporarily disabling your anti-virus application and any anti-spyware
applications' real-time protection before installing the updates.

Both updates write a KBxxxxx.log to %windir%.
Since you did not post the KB number of the other update, start with the
KB939653.log [IE Cumulative Sec Update] and see if there are any obvious
errors showing.
The other updates were for OE, Kodak Image Viewer, and RPC.
I'd suspect the KB933729.log would show *something* to do with the RPC
update as a possible culprit.

Also, check the System event log for a possible clue.
