New PC loaded with crap and bloated

Tom

Ok well I have bought my first pre-built PC.

I made the restore disks after first boot.

I picked through the garbage from the OEM and still think it is sluggish.

I would like to use a fresh install to strip it down. I have a both a OEM
and a retail copy of the XP Home OS if I install from that clean and use the
Key from the side of the PC will it activate?? I want to use my actual key
from the side of the PC and not the "generic" one from the OEM's image.

Will the key activate? I assume I have the right to use one copy of the OS
due to the sticker so why can't I install it from different media?

Any feedback as to will it will activate?? I paid for the OS in the PC
price.

If it won't activate...now I can finally understand why the pirated copies
are so popular.

If you use an OEM CD for that OEM key - it *should* work.
Did they send you an actual Windows XP CD?

The CD key must match the type of media.
(Reail, OEM, MSDN, Upgrade, etc.)

Try it - find out. You can always restore.

They aren't "popular", just easy.

I did not get any Disks with this one you burn them off to DVD upon first
boot up. So its a disk image restore type.

I have both types of disks available OEM and retail.

I thought I read in here that they turned all those blocks of stickers
numbers sold to OEM off from activations.

have you heard that ??

Google and you will find there is a way to reinstall an OEM product without
having to activate again.

Just don't make any hardware changes.

Did the new computer come with Norton or McAfee preloaded?
You can replace either with freeware alternatives to improve
system performance without messing with the operating system.

I dumped McAfee right off and Norton will go in about 2 weeks. Norton has
became such a hog

I would install using the cd you bought. when thats done installing you
will be asked to activate. If the activation code don't work you can
call microsoft to reissue you a code to activate it. This should get
you going in the right direction.

I never, ever, had a problem activating XP. Sometimes I had to make the
call to MS. But still, no problem as long as you have legit
disks/serials.
