I had to re-install my operating system because I had a hardware
failure which forced my to replace the motherboard. Now I can't
get my cd/dvd writing software to work with the same Plextor PX712A
it was working with before.
I doubt this problem pertains to bios settings or hardware
configuration (jumpers). Apparently, Windows Media Player 11 will
work with this drive, burn cd's, jsut fine. This makes me a little
suspicious.
Can someone clue me in on how to get Roxio 6 to recognize my CD/DVD
burner as its default drive?

Here are the people who can help you:

although, to be honest, Roxio 6 is five generations behind the
current version, so I don't know how much help you'll be able to
find.
What does the version of my cd/dvd writing software have to do with
anything? It worked before -- this is an XP re-installation issue.
Thank you very much.
Not really. If you would not be quite so defensive and read the advice you
were given - it states that you may not be able to receive help for your
problem (the problem is *not* Windows XP nor is it the installation of
Windows XP - it is with the software you are trying to use on it) because
the company that made the software exhibiting the issue does not support
that version of the software any longer. If Windows XP is seeing the drives
fine and can burn to the drives fine - then the issue is not with Windows
XP.
Also - a little searching on your own might have come across this:
http://forums.cnet.com/5208-7813_102-0.html?forumID=44&threadID=307761&messageID=2852796
and
http://forums.support.roxio.com/index.php?showtopic=37061
(The Roxio Forums - where people go to get help with Roxio problems.)
Where they clearly state that others are having an issue with Roxio 6 and
Windows XP. The 'fix' it seems is to upgrade to the latest PXEngine.
However - there may be more to it than that - one of the two links there may
help remedy your situation.
Personally - I would just run through these steps:

Even if it doesn't sound precisely like your symptoms.
