DVD Writer problem

Chris Thorpe

My dvd writer has stopped writing disc's.

Its a strange problem really, i thought my old drive was knackered (only 11
months old!) so thought right ill get a new one, put the new one in and iv
still got the same problem, the drive can read both cd's and dvd's fine but
the two programs i use to burn (nero 7 and windvd creator) just dont see the
dvd writer at all!

The writer now comes up in the my computer section as a dvd-ram, but if you
put a blank dvd in the drive it then says its a cd-drive!

Iv tried the windows hotfix of removing the upper and lower filters, iv
changed the sata cable, and check the bios settings but nothing sorts it out?

Can anyone help please?

Try the old and the new drives one at a time in another XP computer that you
know has working drives. Burn some files to CD. Do they work in the other
machine?

Hi Chris,

Is your profile limited by any chance? Either way, check these settings:

Allow or Disable CD Burn Options (Line 23)
http://www.kellys-korner-xp.com/xp_tweaks.htm

Manual Edits:

To allow Limited User's to burn CD's, Go to Start/Run/Regedit and navigate
to this key:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Winlogon

Look in the right pane for AllocateDASD and double click the entry. Set the
value to 2.

On PRO, this is exposed in Local Security Policy under Security
Settings\Local Policies\Security Options

"Devices: Allowed to format and eject removable media"

For XP Pro, you can do this by clicking Start, Run and entering SECPOL.MSC

Go to Local Policies, Security Options, look in the right pane for Devices:
Allowed to Format and eject removable media. Set this option to
Administrators and Interactive Users

Hi Chris,

Unfortunately those drives have become like floppy drives, not as
reliable as when they cost quite a bit more. ;-)

I had a drive recently stop writing. It reads fine, so I stuck it on
the top of the tower and added a new drive. But the write function no
longer works. And it hardly had any writing hours on it, but was out of
warranty.
