XP recognizes new DVD writer only as the old writer

Hello,
I recently installed a Samsung SH-S182D DVD writer in my computer,
replacing a malfunctioning Lite-On DVD writer. XP, however, refuses
to recognize the new writer as anything other than the old Lite-On. It
actually seems to work - I can burn DVDs in Nero, even though it still
thinks it's the old Lite-On, but I'd like to be able to update the
Samsung's firmware and use it's superior speed.

I've tried deleting all DVD info in Device Manager and I've tried
turning off all optical devices in the BIOS, but every time I restart
XP proudly announces that it's found new hardware - the old Lite-On,
unfortunately.

Obviously, this is no coincidence, but I'm not sure how to make a
"clean start." I did notice that inside the BIOS utility itself it
seems to think it's a Lite-On drive, which seems odd.

Any suggestions would be most appreciated.

TIA.

After removing the drives delete the upper and lower filters in the registry
per this KB article. See if that helps.

You can no longer access the CD drive or the DVD drive, or you receive an
error message after you remove a CD recording program or a DVD recording
program in Windows XP: "error code 31"

Thanks Rock, but that didn't fix it. Imagine my shock, however, when
in the process of trying your suggestion I discovered that MISCHIEVOUS
ELVES had snuck into the not-very-well-lit computer room and put the
old drive back in the computer when I wasn't looking. Of course,
MISCHIEVOUS ELVES is the only rational explanation, because I would
never do something so stupid as to mix the drives up and accidentally
reinstall the one I'd just removed myself...
