Word viewer does not save Word files. It only allows you to view them.
Can you open the Word Perfect Word output in WordPad? If you can there is no
reason why the recipients should not be able to open it in Word. RTF
conversion is standard in Word for backward compatibility with earlier
versions.
You could obtain the trial version of Office which would allow you to create
and save your resume and allow you to update it until the trial expires.

Word must be purchased. There is a free trial download, but it expires
after 30 days, I think. You might check out OpenOffice, which is a free
download - it might produce a more "Word compatible" file format, but I
can't say as I have no experience with it.

If one of your resumes lands you the compensation you are looking for, the
purchase price of Word will be worth it!

As others have said, there is a free trial version of Office 2003, or you
can download OpenOffice. Alternatively, you can spend $100 or (usually) less
for Works Suite 2006 and get Word 2002 along with five other useful apps;
