New HP photosmart C3180 won't print

Can anyone help me please? I've been given the above printer (new but
tried out on my dad's so I know it should work) but it won't print.
I've gone the troubleshooter. I connected the cable at the right
time. Have uninstalled/reinstalled 3 times. Checked for updated
drivers. Check connections. HELP!!
The most I have been able to get it to do is print an alignment
sheet. (It took a few minutes to decide it wanted to do this and I'd
given up!).
I tried to get it to print a sample picture and other checks in the
toolbox but wouldn't. After I'd left it and came back later it had
printed out a few sheets of a few lines of gobbledegook.
Any help/suggestions would we extremely gratefully received!!
Many thanks

Does this printer use USB? If so, make sure you use a USB port at the back of
the computer and don't use a USB hub. Do other USB devices work OK?
The other thing to try is to first uninstall the printer using the utility
provided by HP, make sure that there are no icons for it in Printers and Faxes
in the control panel, if there are then delete them. Disconnect the USB cable
Now open the Printers and Faxes applet, select File, Server Properties, Drivers
and Remove any drivers that refer to this printer.
Now reboot the PC, reinstall the software and plug in the cable when asked to.
