"new" HP laptop with a Windows Vista Administrator already registe

I just bought an HP computer from office depot, but the display was the last
one they had, and they said they weren't ordering any more of the particular
kind I wanted so I went ahead and bought it.

Windows Vista already has an adminstrator account registered - "op" - and I
do not know the password... is there a way I can override this to change the
password?
Or should I call the store or HP for assistance?

You probably should take it back to the place you purchased it let them
reset the user name and password.

I would start by calling the store.
Many times they use a standard password for display models.

Try hitting return. It may be blank. If so then you can the advice given
in one of the other post to change the password.

Remember, the root Administrator account in Vista is disabled by default. So
even if the OP were to restart in Safe Mode to log in as Administrator, it
would not be enabled to do so.

Is there another user account on the computer or is the "OP" account the
only one?

If it's the only account, your only recourse is to go to the store and have
them reset the password, there's no easy way around the password on a single
user system.

If there is a second account, log on to that account, click the Start Orb,
type CMD, ALTERNATE (Right click if you're right handed) on the CMD icon
that will show up at the top of the search list and choose "Run as
administrator"

At the command prompt type this exactly;

net user op *

This will prompt you to type a password. You're actually resetting the
password, pick something easy to remember, you'll be asked to type it again.

Once you have confirmation that the password has been set you can now log
onto the "op" account using the new password you just set.

I'd just like to add;

This is a great way to screw with others that use the same computer.

Just be nice, make sure you change their password to something you'll
remember and when you're sure they've had enough, let them have the new
password.
