New Hard drive with current XP

Hi,

I have a 40 GB HD in my laptop and have just bought a 160.

I have already done a True Image of my C drive with XP on it and placed it on
my external F drive.

Now I want to take my current C Drive out and replace it with the F Drive 160GB
but need to have my XP up and running on it.

How do I do this?

Thanks

No, you don't need to have XP up and running on any drive while you are
switching.
In fact, you must do the change while the computer is shut down.
My process is:
1. Shutdown the laptop
2. Remove the drive from the external enclosure
3. Remove the current drive from the laptop.
4. Insert the 160 GB drive in the laptop
5. Boot the laptop.
Before doing this, make certain that the external drive will fit inside the
laptop. Laptops use 2.5 inch drives while nearly all others are 3.5 inch.
Also, are you certain that the larger drive will not overheat the laptop?
It probably won't, but make sure anyway.
When you say "True Image", is that the cloning of one drive to another, or
is it a backup? Acronis True Image will do both.

Keep the 40GB drive in and copy it again, but this time *clone* the
drive (instead of imaging it). The you will be able to swap drives and
boot off the new, larger one.

If you purchased ATI and have an install disk, you can boot up with the disk
in the drive without having an OS on the drive. ATI will load into memory from
the disk when you select it and you can then run the restore as long as both
internal/external drives are seen by ATI.

If you purchased it online and do not have a bootable disk, open ATI and
select to create bootable recovery media. During the creation wizard you will
be presented with if available, different media where to create the bootable
recovery media. Select your CD/DVD RW and continue following the prompts. Once
created, reboot with the disk in the drive.

If it doesn't boot to the disk, enter your BIOS and set the CD/DVD drive as
the first disk to boot from. Take note that it is the Bootable Recovery Media
you want, not the Secure Zone or Recovery Manager.

Aronis True Image will create an emergency bootable CD - as a mater of fact
you should have done so as part of the Acronis installation.

Boot the Acronis CD and "restore" from the "F" drive to the new drive.

Thanks guys. I did make the boot CD and made an image before I realized I
could have cloned it.

Anyway it was quite easy to do and with the new bigger drive windows does load
okay but I have just made another post about what is happening now which is
more than likely a different problem, maybe a setting....
