This is my first posting ever.
I have a computer using xp-pro as my primary computer. I recently purchased a new computer which came with xp-home. I am using a wireless router for the computers to get internet access. This part seems to work fine.

I have tried several times to network these two machines so either machine can access files and programs on the other computer but I can't get it to work.

Can someone please guide me, a totally non-tech person, in a step-by-step way, from the very beginning, so that I can get these two machines networked?
I feel fairly comfortable using certain softwares, but I seem to lose it when it comes to other term like Buffer,Administrator, etc.

Thank you in advance for your help.

hmm i myself am no net expert yet
but heres a few things to check

right click my computer and then the netword id tab
click advanced at the bottom and set the workgroup to whaterv "mygroup"

do this on bothmachines

next select properties of your netowrk card on each machine

set the machine that does not connect directlyto the internet to a static ip (properties of tcp/ip)

perhaps 122.122.100.5
whatevber

subnet mask 255.255.255.1

your other machine likely has a static ip already or obtains one dynamicaly through your isp

so long as the machine are on the same workgroup however and each has an IP address they should communicate and show up under thier computer names

if your only getting the computer names, enable file and printer sharing and select the drives/folders to share, right click, sharing, and enable it on the network

I right click on 'my computer' but nowhere does it show me 'Network ID Tab'

I can't locate this next suggestion you made;
'next select properties of your netowrk card on each machine'

help?

sorry
properties>computer name> change/details
name machines and workgroup

then network connectiomns under control panel
select your active NIC or network card, rightclick properties

a window will list a few protocols
highligh tcp/ip and clcik the properties button below

check assignstatic ip
FOR NON INTERNET MACHINE

you should not alter the ip address of the card that connects to the internet as it will interfere with your isp

sorry for any confusion
