Networking with XPsp2

anonymous

I have xpsp2 on one pc and sp1 on the other, they are
both set to auto IPconfing and they both worked over a
crossover cable before I put sp2 now the sp2 pc just
tells me limited or no connection, if i set the ips up I
can get it to say connected but no matter what I do I can
not see the workgroup, I would like a solution that uses
auto ipconfig as the pc is frequently taken to lans and
they all use auto ip so me have to set the ip is not
practical. Does anyone know whay it won'twork? is it
because XPsp2 is still buggy and needs a hotfix to to
correct it ???

Thanks to anyone thats able to help.

Hi
My guess would be that it is Firewall related.
WinXP SP2 installs with the new Firewall On. Read the Firewall Instructions
to unblock Local Traffic.

What IP addresses do the computers have when set to autoconfig?
You can run ipconfig to find out. How about the subnet mask?

Can the computers ping each other?

Do you get any error messages? What exactly do you mean by
"limited or no connection"?

1st has sp2 pc IP Address: 169.254.115.208
Subnet Mask: 255.255.0.0

2nd sp1
IP 169.254.54.35
Subnet Mask: 255.255.0.0

If I dont set the ips and sub mask it has a yellow!
through the local area connection icon saying local
limited or no connection. If i set them it gos to a
normal icon then I can not see the workgroup pc names
workgrop are set up shared folders are set up allso the
pc with sp1 can see its self in my network places but the
sp2 one just says workgroup inaccesable you do not have
permision etc I have checked everything and its set up
the right way I thing well it worked fine before I put
sp2 on anyway.

All normal so far. You may want to look through
http://www.michna.com/kb/WxSP2.htm and check particularly the
firewall settings.

As long as you're not connected to the Internet or to any
foreign computer, you could disable the firewall entirely for a
test, but then you should re-enable it and set it up properly.

It is particularly important if you go to LAN parties. :)-)

I had this same problem, I do not know exactly how I fixed it but it involved
running the network wizard many, many times...

I did not get the limited connection warning when they couldn't detect each
other, they connected but could not ping with all firewalls off. After many
wizard runs and many reboots following, it eventually started working. It
turns out that the one that fixed it was the SP1 computer. Try making sure
the SP2 one is set up properly, then turn the SP1 on and give it time to
detect, try the wizard and see what happens. Hope you get it working
eventually.

The "limited or no connectivity" message is new in SP2 and doesn't
necessarily mean that anything's wrong. It indicates that:

1. The network connection is configured to obtain an IP address
automatically, and:

2. Your computer couldn't communicate with a DHCP server to make the
assignment.

In that case, the network connection should get an automatic private
IP address in the 169.254.x.x range. If all of the computers on the
network do that, they can communicate with each other.

To turn off the message:

1. Right click the network connection.

2. Click Properties.

3. Un-check "Notify me when this connection has limited or no
connectivity".

The new Windows Firewall in SP2 might be blocking communication
between your computers. Turn the firewall on, click Exceptions, and
make sure that "File and Printer Sharing" is checked.

Thanks for the explanation Steve (of course same issue here :)

the question now is, why could my SP1 communicate with the DHCP of my router
and not the SP2 ? do I need to wait for a new firmware of the router or of
the Wireless Card on installed on my desktop?

looking at all these posts it seems that there's definetely something going
wrong on XP...

ciao Luca

I've installed SP2 on several computers and haven't had any problems
with wired or wireless networking, so I don't know what has gone wrong
on yours.

I'd try un-installing the wireless network adapter, then re-installing
it using the latest driver program from the manufacturer's web site.

Thanks for help.

I had to take sp2 off to be able to tranfer and back up
data so I didn't have time to try to get sp2 to work on
the lan. I will try again though and try to get it
working.

I got that with an upgrade of HE to SP2 yesterday...

It appeared I had surfing ability... however, the IP was quad zeros
(0.0.0.0). Nothing I did got it to get an IP.

And that included turning OFF the FW, doing repairs and manually assigning
IP.

Thoughts?

TIA.

If you're able to surf the Internet, there's a network connection that
has a valid, non-zero IP address.

What connections do you see in the Network Connections folder? Which
one has 0.0.0.0? Which one has a valid, non-zero address? What type
of Internet connection do you have?
