Networking with XP pro

Hello guys,

This is my first networking try... Not having success!

I have used the Networ setup wizard

I have a Linksys wireless G router. There are 3 computers sharing internet
connection off of the router. 2 are hard wired into the router and one is
using a wireless USB pot.

I am trying to just network the 2 wired computers (share program
files...etc) and maybe the wireless one at a later time.

At this point on the first computer... I can see the 2nd computer in my
Workgroups..
when i click on the second computer it says "(computer name) is not
accessible. you might not have permission to use this network resource.
Contact the administrator of this server to find out if you have access
permissions.

network path was not found"

When I get on the 2nd computer..... there is nothing in the workgroups. it
sends a message of "(workgroup) is not accessible. you might not have
permission to use this network resource. Contact the administrator of this
server to find out if you have access permissions.
The list of servers for this work group is not currently available"

Somebody Help ME!!!!!!!

Are both computers successfully connecting to the router?

Start with ipconfig information for each computer.
Start - Run - "cmd". Type "ipconfig /all >c:\ipconfig.txt" into the command
window - Open c:\ipconfig.txt in Notepad, copy and paste into your next post.

What version of XP - Home or Pro - is on each computer? A combination? What
Service Pack on each? All of this makes a difference.

Are you running both Client for Microsoft Networks, and File and Printer Sharing
for Microsoft Networks (Local Area Connection - Properties), on each computer?
Do you have shares setup on each?

Are you running NetBIOS Over TCP/IP (Local Area Connection - Properties - TCP/IP
- Properties - Advanced - WINS) on each computer?

Make sure the browser service is running on each computer. Control Panel -
Administrative Tools - Services. Verify that the Computer Browser, and the
TCP/IP NetBIOS Helper, services both show with Status = Started.

On any XP Pro computer, check to see if Simple File Sharing (Control Panel -
Folder Options - View - Advanced settings) is enabled or disabled. With XP Pro,
you need to have SFS properly set on each computer.

On XP Pro with SFS disabled, check the Local Security Policies (Control Panel -
Administrative Tools). Under Local Policies - Security Options, look at
"Network access: Sharing and security model", and ensure it's set to "Classic -
local users authenticate as themselves".

On XP Pro with SFS disabled, if you set the above Local Security Policy to
"Guest only", enable the Guest account, using Start - Run - "cmd" - type "net
user guest /active:yes" in the command window. If "Classic", setup and use a
common non-Guest account on all computers. Whichever account is used, give it
an identical, non-blank password on all computers.

On XP Home, and on XP Pro with Simple File Sharing enabled, make sure that the
Guest account is enabled, on each computer. Enable Guest with Start - Run -
"cmd" - type "net user guest /active:yes" in the command window.

On XP Pro, if you're going to use Guest authentication, check your Local
Security Policy (Control Panel - Administrative Tools) - User Rights Assignment,
on the XP Pro computer, and look at "Deny access to this computer from the
network". Make sure Guest is not in the list.

Do any of the computers have a software firewall (ICF / WF, or third party)? If
so, you need to configure them for file sharing. Firewall configurations are a
very common cause of (network) browser, and file sharing, problems.

Cheers,
Chuck

wow thanks for getting back so quick!!!!!
Both computers are using xp pro SP2

netbios over tcp/ip is enabled
browser and tcp/ip netbios is started
sfs is unchecked on both systems
local security policies is set to classic
the only firewall that we have is from SP2

File sharing is a pretty complex application - and it has to be working on both
computers. If you can't get file sharing to work between the two computers, how
do you know which computer is causing the problem? So look at both computers
simultaneously if you can.

But please start by removing IPV6 (aka Microsoft Advanced Networking), from the
list of items under Local Area Connection Properties. You only need the
following items in the list:
Client for Microsoft Networks
File and Printer Sharing For Microsoft Networks
QoS Packet Scheduler (optional)
Internet Protocol (TCP/IP)

Posting the ipconfig (and other diagnostics) after each change may be a
nuisance, but working slowly and deliberately IMHO is the best way to find a
problem.

Let me know if you don't see an improvement after removing IPV6. We'll continue
with some more diagnostics after that.

Remember when you're working with My Workgroups (Network Neighborhood / My
Network Places), you're looking at output from the browser subsystem. Any
change you make in file sharing could take up to 52 minutes to show up in the
browser display - don't expect immediate changes.

CompaqFront1 looks better. Is NBT enabled on it? (I've yet to see "NetBIOS Over
TCP/IP ... Enabled" in ipconfig output).

DellFront1 still shows IPV6 though. Please un install IPV6.

What ipconfig do you get from one of the non problematic computers?

Do you have connectivity between both computers?
From each problem computer, test connectivity and name resolution:
1) Ping itself by name.
2) Ping itself by ip address.
3) Ping the other by name.
4) Ping the other by ip address.
5) Ping 127.0.0.1.
6) Ping the router.
Report success / exact error displayed in each test (12 tests total).

Once we get connectivity working, we can work on file sharing.

Cheers,
Chuck

Chuck,

I am not sure how to report this.......?

For each test, do you get:
a) 4 x "Reply from..."?
b) 4 x "Request timed out"?
c) "...could not find host..."?
d) Other?

Result a is good. Result b indicates no connectivity. Result c indicates a
name resolution problem. And there's always a possibility of something
different, to give result d.

Cheers,
Chuck

OK, there doesn't look like a physical connectivity issue. Both computers can
successfully ping 192.168.1.1. That's the good news.

But with neither computer able to ping CompaqFront1, and with CompaqFront1
unable to ping DellFront1, I'd say that you have a firewall problem. Disable
Windows Firewall on both computers first, then repeat the ping tests.

If no improvement in pinging with WF disabled, then boot both computers into
Safe Mode with Networking. See if that makes a difference.

My experience is the vast majority of all cases involving mysterious inability
of two computers to ping each other, one or both computers has a misconfigured
or malfunctioning firewall.

Please get rid of IPV6 on both computers, and repeat the ipconfig listings too.

Cheers,
Chuck

OK, the ipconfigs look a lot cleaner. And they make a good place to start.

I'll bet you're tired of retyping each ping over and over. And you're not
thrilled about retyping the results either.

Here's a patience saver.

Take the following code (everything inside the "#######"). (Did I get the names
and ip addresses right)?

Copy the code, precisely as it is keyed, into Notepad.
Save the file as "tping.cmd", as type "All Files", into folder "C:\Windows".
Run it by Start - Run - "tping".
Wait patiently.
When Notepad opens up displaying c:\tping.txt, copy the entire contents and
paste it into your next post.

#######
@echo off
@echo. >c:\tping.txt
@echo Pings from %computername% >>c:\tping.txt
for %%a in (COMPAQFRONT1 192.168.1.101 DELLFRONT1 192.168.1.100 192.168.1.1
127.0.0.1) do (
@echo. >>c:\tping.txt
@echo Pinging %%a >>c:\tping.txt
ping %%a >>c:\tping.txt
)
notepad c:\tping.txt
