Networking with Win98SE

I have one computer with Windows XP Media Center and another computer with
Win98SE. They are sharing cable modem through a Linksys Router (wired). I
would like to copy some of the files from the old Win98 machine to my WinXP
machine. I have the same workgroup name on both computers and I can see the
Win98 machine when I click "View Workgroup Computers". When I try to access
it I get this error message: "||ComputerName is not accessible. You might
not have permission to use this network resource. Contact the administrator
of this server to find out if you have access permissions. The network path
was not found." I am using the administrator account on WinXP.

I can't use WinXP's Network Wizard on Win98 because my new computer doesn't
have a floppy to create the file and my WinXP is on DVD and the old computer
doesn't have a DVD drive. I looked for help on the internet and tried many
things but nothing seems to help. I can't ping the Win98 machine either.

I'm baffled, I set up a small 10 computer network at work and didn't have
any problems (but all are Win2000). This is the first computer I've used
with WinXP, so I hope someone can tell me what I'm doing wrong. Thanks in
advance for any help provided.

If, repeat IF, memory serves me correctly, you will have to install the
NetBEUI network drivers to 'see' the 98SE machine from the XP machine. They
are not installed by default in XP - look on the CD.

Today Jerry spoke these views with conviction for everyone's
edification:
If, repeat IF, memory serves me correctly, you will have to

default in XP - look on the CD.

I have a similar situation, XP Pro SP1 on one machine and Win 98
SE on the other. Some time back, one of the XP updates I
installed or one of the 98 updates I installed (yes, there still
are some), knocked over the ability to network from 98 to XP,
but I can still see the 98 PC from my XP box. And, I do have
NetBEUI installed, which was put there when I first tried to do
this a couple years back.

I'll soon have a new PC to replace mine, and I'll migrate the
older box to replace the clearly obsolete 98 PC. I worked for
days with my nephew who is pretty good around Windows and
networking and he not only couldn't make my two work, he
couldn't make his own and his mother's work, either!

Go figure!

Well, I solved my own problem....it was the firewall. I turned off my cable
modem, turned off ZoneAlarm on both computers and I had access right away!
So I copied everything I wanted and then turned off file sharing since it
won't be needed anymore.
