networking mystery, unable to ping or access....

Unable to successfully ping between 2 XP Pro computers., Each computer is able to successfully ping itself though. Trying to set up simple file sharing via crossover cable. Get the "...you might not have permission to use this network resource..." message when trying to access either computer.

No firewalls, just regular Norton antivirus 2004.
LAN card is 10/100 dlink DFE-530TX on one computer and NVIDIA onboard networking controller on the other. No irq conflicts. Lights on each LAN indicate crossover connection is active. Lan status shows up as "connected, 100mbps."

Used wizard to set up home network, and also tried running the network diagnostic tool, but no help.
Manually configured LAN ip's 169.254.29.30 and 169.254.29.31
subnet mask 255.255.255.0 on both

Under System/computer name, Workgroups are same on each, set as TRANSFER
Descriptions and computer names are different on each box.

Tried uninstalling and reinstalling items in LAN General properties:
Client for Microsoft Networks
QoS Packet Scheduler
File and Printer Sharing for Microsoft Networks
Internet Protocol

IP Advanced properties WINS tab, NetBIOS over TCP/IP enabled, LMHOSTS lookup enabled as well.

Both have simple file sharing is disabled, and browser service enabled.
Folders for sharing permissions are set for full access. I am logged in as administrator on both machines.

I see via google that many others on the web have identical problem with the "XXX is not accessible, You many not have permission to use this network resource....." message.

All I need is simple file transfer....that's it.

This is going to be the death of me, can anyone please help?

Thanks so much!

if you have made all the correct connection settings then you should try and
enable Guest accounts

Since you've enabled LMHOSTS lookup edit the HOSTS.SAM file
and add an entry for the PC name and IP address and see if
that resolves your problem--

Yes, I have tried setting up guest admin log-ins with identical user names and passwords. I will try editing hosts.sam file but don't I still need a sucessful ping between the two machines before any kind of network exchange is possible?

If he can't ping by IP address, this won't help.

Have you tried changing your crossover cable? Tried using two
straight-throughs and a hub?
