networking 2 computers

D

Dave Robinson

I need help badly. I have a laptop running Windows ME
and a desktop running XP Home. I've purchased a Netgear
FA411 Mobile Adapter which plugs into my laptop with a
RED crossover cable connected to the desktop internal
Realtek RTL8139 card.

Now according to Windows all I have to do is run the "Set
up a home or small office network" wizard and all will be
ok. HUH!!

I've been on this for days now and I cannot get the two
to talk. The local area connection status on both
computers says that they are connected and if I switch
off either computer I get a message telling me that the
network cable is unplugged.

What do I need to do to fix this, barring throwing both
computers out the window.

Robert,

I've tried to run ipconfig but the screen on both
computers flashes up to quickly, like ½ sec. if that, and
is gone.

I'm now reduced to backing up all my files and re-loading
Windows on one andtrying again.

Surely it can't be that difficult to link them?

Rgds,

Dave R.
