Folks,

My new company has a situation where the switch lights will all flash at the
same time and the network connections and programs get stuck on every
computer. This happens every other Friday around 5PM. Let me give you the
low-down first. Two external Windows 2000 DNS Server had a virus but the
antivirus software says files are quaranteened. I just updated all the
Windows 2000 Servers to SP4 and ran all Windows Updates. I updated the
Exchange 2000 Server with the new Security Patch MS03-046; also it has
Exchange SP3. Have not restarted it though, not till after 5:30PM. The
internal private LAN addresses and the external public addresses are all
mixed in the same switch. The HP ProCurve 4000 switch has VLAN capabilities
but it's not set. Today, I just updated the two ISA Server with SP1 and
restarted them.

I have the following setup:

(4) Windows 2000 File Sharing Server (internal).
(1) Windows 2000 intranet web server (internal).
(1) Exchange 2000 Server (internal).
(2) Windows 2000 Server with ISA Server (internal/external).
(2) Windows 2000 DNS Server (external).
(1) Windows 2000 Imail Server (external).
(1) Windows 2000 web server (external).

I tried to narrow down the situation and telnet the switch. It said that two
ports had 100+ bad RX (receive) errors. I narrowed down the two ports
comming from one ISA Server - the internal and external interfaces. After
doing all the patching and restarting of the PCs. I still get some RX errors
just on those two ports on the ISA Server. I was just about to move the
cables to another port but my work partners thought it would be a good idea
to ask around first. That same ISA Server was constantly sending "SMTP
XEXCHG 50" errors. I just updated to ISA SP1 and restarted but am still
receiving these errors.

The antivirus software seems up to date and there are no reports of viruses
for today. Could this be related to a virus? I also noticed that three ports
on the switch where set to 10Mbit Half-Duplex instead of 100Mbit-Full
Duplex, but I left the three 10Mbit ones unused. I may need to reset the
switch to factory default and take it from there. Could it be the switch
needs to be reset to factory default? I don't have the switch administration
password, so I may as well do so. What do you think? Could it be Exchange
needs to be retarted? Could it be the ISA server's SMTP log errors? Could it
be a bad cable? Could it be the switch? Could it be a virus? Please help
narrow this down. Or advise if you've seen similar situation.
