Network Problem with Jack and Jill

P

PT

I have two computers linked via a common router, running WinXP Home

The network consist of a super simple MS home network, with a
workgroup named “Workgroup”, and the two computers, named Jack and
Jill.

In order to pass files between the two, each computer has two desktop
folders: JackShared and “JillShared”. Each is set to permit full
access including editing, renaming etc..

For several years this network has functioned without a hitch. Today,
for no reason I can see here’s what’s happening.

Jack’s computer and the related JackShared folders on the two
computers functions normally.

But while Jill’s folders on Jill allow me to add files, nothing in
this folder is visible in the JillShared folder on Jack.

If I look at “My Network Places on Jack, the comments “Computer”
section shows Jill’s computer as “Unknown” .

And if on Jack, I click on the JillShared folder, I get this message:

\\Jill\JillShared is not accessible. You might not have permission to
use this network resource …. The network path was not found.

So somehow, I must have diddled something. Suggestions are welcome

You need to supply more information. Do this on *each* PC:
1. Click Start / Run
2. Type the three letters cmd
3. Click OK
4. Type the following commands and press the Enter key after each of them:
set comp > c:\test.txt
ipconfig /all >> c:\test.txt
net share >> c:\test.txt
ping jack >> c:\test.txt
ping jill >> c:\test.txt
notepad c:\test.txt
5. Paste the contents of the result from *each* PC into your reply.

It is possible to draw some conclusions from your test results:
- Jack's IP address is 192.168.1.3
- Jill's address is 192.168.1.7
- Both addresses could change since the PCs use DHCP.
- The default gateway (probably your modem) is 192.168.1.1
- Since Jill can ping Jack, the network adapters and cables are probably OK.
- The most likely cause for Jack being unable to ping Jill is a firewall
problem.

I recommend that you temporarily disable the Windows firewall on both PCs
and also any other firewall you might have (e.g. ZoneAlarm a firewall
included with your virus scanner). If you use a dial-up modem rather than an
ADSL or Cable Modem then you must physically disconnect the modem from the
Internet during the tests.

If Jack is still unable to ping Jill then you should reboot both machines
into "Safe Mode with Networking" and try again.

You should also try and ping the following addresses from both machines:
- 192.168.1.1
- 192.168.1.3
- 192.168.1.7
Make sure that 1.3 and 1.7 is still the current address for Jack'n'Jill.

What seems to be happening is that NetBIOS name-registration is
resolving "Jill" to the IP address of Jill's wireless adapter,
192.168.0.1. Because this isn't on the same subnet as your wired
network, Jack can't find Jill.

Is there some reason that you have the wireless adapter in Jill turned
on? Are you trying to use Internet Connection Sharing from Jill via a
wireless link? If the answer to both questions is no, disable Jill's
wireless adapter.

Also, ensure that NetBIOS is properly turned on (both Jack and Jill):

- Go to Network Connections and right click on Local Area Connection
- Click Properties
- On the General tab, select Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) and click Properties
- Click Advanced
- On the WINS tab, click the radio button to "Enable NetBIOS over TCP/IP"
- OK your way out

For more detail on the above, see:
http://networking.nitecruzr.net/2006/04/netbios-over-tcpip.html

What seems to be happening is that NetBIOS name-registration is resolving
"Jill" to the IP address of Jill's wireless adapter, 192.168.0.1. Because
this isn't on the same subnet as your wired network, Jack can't find Jill.

Is there some reason that you have the wireless adapter in Jill turned on?
Are you trying to use Internet Connection Sharing from Jill via a wireless
link? If the answer to both questions is no, disable Jill's wireless
adapter.

Also, ensure that NetBIOS is properly turned on (both Jack and Jill):

- Go to Network Connections and right click on Local Area Connection
- Click Properties
- On the General tab, select Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) and click
Properties
- Click Advanced
- On the WINS tab, click the radio button to "Enable NetBIOS over TCP/IP"
- OK your way out

How could I miss this one? It's so obvious!

To the OP: You have two network adapters on Jill: One wired, the other
wireless. They operate on different subnets. You should now report your
exact network topology: Which adapter you use for what.

Actually, you wanted to rerun the test on Jack.

At least the test on Jill shows that - on Jill - the name "Jill" is now
properly associated with 192.168.1.7, which is the IP address of Jill's
LAN adapter. However, it may take some time for the nbtstat name cache
on Jack (which is where the names, like "Jill," are paired with IP
addresses) to reflect this change. Try this on Jack:

1. Click Start / Run
2. Type the three letters cmd
3. Click OK
4. Type the following command and press the Enter key:

nbtstat -R

Be sure to use an upper case R.

Or, reboot Jack.

If neither the nbtstat command nor rebooting helps, go back and try the
steps in Pegasus's 4:52 post (the one that begins, "It is possible to
draw some conclusions from your test results").

Problem solved. Weird

Following Pegasus’s original suggestion,

1. I turned off Windows Firewall on Jack – problem persisted
2. I did the same on Jill – Eureka Jack can see Jill
3. For further testing, I restored the Windows firewall on Jack – Jill
is still accessible
4. Then just to confirm that Jill’s firewall was the problem, I turned
Jill’s firewall back on.

AND JACK CAN STILL SEE JILL (?????)

THANK YOU, THANK YOU, THANK YOU

But how could turning Jill’s firewall off momentarily do the trick?

FYI, here are the detailed settings on Jack and Jill’s Windows
firewalls

General Tab: Jack & Jill - Firewall is ON

Exceptions Tab:
Jill - various programs checked except “remote Desktop, Remote
Assistance and UPnP Framework
Jack – same except UPnP checked
Jack & Jill – Display Notice when Firewall blocks

Advanced: Tab

Jack & Jill -Network Connection Settings Window - 1394, Wireless and
Local Area all checked

Jill Accessible Services Tab– Nothing Checked
Jack Nothing checked except a group of items labeled Mionet Remote
Drive Access (see note below)

Jill ICMP Tab – Nothing checked
Jack Nothing checked except a group of items labeled Mionet Remote
Drive Access

Security Logging Button
Jack & Jill file: C:\WINDOWS\firewall.log

ICMP Section Settings button- Jack & Jill - nothing checked

FWIW, several times I've previously allowed Hewlett Packard tech
Support to work on Paul’s computer remotely. This probably accounts
for the Mionet and other “remote” items

I suspect that the firewall got confused about the two NICs, even though it
should be able to handle them with ease. Anyway, thanks for the feedback. I
wish more posters would take the trouble to let respondents know what
happened in the end. Most just disappear from the scene, assuming that the
worn-out TIA is sufficient. It isn't.
