Network probem with Compaq Laptop

Hi,

I'm having a problem trying to get my son's Compaq Presario with Windows XP
Home to network. This should be a no-brainier with XP, but it does not want
to connect.

My son bought the Compaq new a few months ago and brought it over for me to
set up. I had no problem getting it to network then, everything was fine.

Then he got a Comcast Cable hookup and wanted to net work his laptop with
his desktop all running XP, and that's when I started having problems.

I have it hooked up to my network now with the same workgroup name and when
I open My Network Places it's blank. When I click on View Workgroup
Computers I get this message:

"CAT (my workgroup name) is not accessible. You might not have permission to
use this network resource. Contact the administrator of this server to find
out if you have access permissions. The list of servers for this workgroup
is not currently available."

From the command prompt\ipconfig everything look good. I can ping out to
all computers in the network but can not ping from other computers to the
laptop.

I can also pick up the DSL connection on this network with the laptop so I
know it's not cabling.

From any other computer I can also see the laptop after a View Workgroup
Computers is clicked, but when I try to get in I get a message:

"\\Scottlaptop is not accessible. You might not have permission to use this
network resource. See admin bla bla bla. Network path not found.

So how do I get permission?? And how did I lose permission anyway.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.
