network file copies/saves have dramatically slowed down

We have a windows 2000 SP4 file server in our environment. In the last few
days, I have had several users tell me that the "save" and file "copies"
from/to this server have dramatically slowed down. I cannot see anything
causing this particular issue when I log on the server using terminal
services... All appears quite normal - at least as far as I can tell. The
users in question are Xp Pro SP1 users. Some recently had the lastest round
of windows updates installed on their machines...

I am not sure if there is a performance issue on the server OR is there some
kind of network latency issues...

What would be my best course of action to trouble shoot this issue?

I can think of several obvious potential issues i.e. cabling, hubs, network
cards etc... What about using a packet filter and how does one determine
what should be on the network and what should not be in terms of packets??

Any help in this matter would be greatly appreciated!

Check the Firewall on the problem XPs. You will find that the MS update has
turned it on for you, thanks Microsoft.

Nope, not turned on.... Actually when I checked the Windows updates, they
in fact did NOT get installed afterall so that is not it....

Thanks anyway though...

I'd recommend trying to evaluate the common factors of the afflicted systems.
Check their IP settings, NIC speed and duplex settigns, etc. Then, possibly
check how they are accessing the share. Is there a problem w/the
account/group resolution? Is the DC work queue backing up or are there any
issues w/authentication?

You might want to check the packets and see if anything stands out, but
right now it seems you're looking for a needle in a haystack. Try verifiying
proper configs on all other items and you should come up w/a common
denominator.
