Network Cable Unplugged-Linksys new installation

I'm setting up a laptop here and have installed Linksys wireless G notebook
Adapter WPC54G which was running perfectly in the old laptop. The new machine
is an IBM Thinkpad with Windows XP. I installed the Linksys software. The
computer recognizes the card and tells me it's working but I keep getting
"netork cable unplugged." I ran the setup wizard on my desktop again just to
be sure. Can't figure out what to do next. Suggestions?

That doesn't quite make sense. The "network cable unplugged" refers to
your ethernet connection - not the wireless connection - and it is
logical that it is "unplugged" because it is available but not being
used.

Does the wireless see your wireless router? What wireless router do you
have? Encryption?

If the message is coming from a wireless network connection, it's
possible that you've disabled the wireless radio. Some notebook
computers have a switch for enabling/disabling it.

Is there a wired Ethernet connection on the computer? If that
connection is enabled and not connected to anything, it will give the
"network cable unplugged" message.

Thanks Steve,
That little switch was apparently problem 1. Now the notebook is getting a
strong signal but while it's sending packets it's not receiving any. I have
set it for windows to configure automatically. Not sure what else to do.

Try turning the Windows Firewall off. Assuming that you have WinXP sp2,
see http://www.microsoft.com/technet/community/columns/cableguy/cg0104.mspx
If that does the trick, then turn it back on and configure the
appropriate exceptions.

Have you entered the password correctly for whatever encryption is set
in the router?

Thanks Lem,
I went into the Linksys panel and it tells me encription is disabled. It
also told me the SSID was Linksys so i changed that to mshome. (the name of
the network) It didn't work. Linksys tells me the device is disabled. Also, I
can't find the firewall! Everytime I click on change settings for this
connection, no matter which connection I choose I do not get a firewall
option. I think i'm losing my mind. Thanks tho for your help.

Alice,

When Steve Winograd suggested that some laptops have a switch to turn
wireless on/off, he may not have realized that the WPC54G is an external
(PCMCIA card) wireless adapter. In your answer earlier this morning,
you said that you had such a switch. This sounds to me as if your new
laptop -- unlike your old one -- has a built-in wireless capability. If
that's so, you may have a situation where you have two wireless cards
trying to run at the same time.

Remove the WPC54G from the laptop.

Do you have a wireless network icon in the system tray (next to the
clock?) Try the switch in both positions. If you're not sure, open
Device Manager with the WPC54G removed from the laptop. Click on the +
next to "Network Adapters" -- is there a wireless device listed there?
Is is active?

As for the firewall, open the control panel (Start > Settings > Control
Panel). If you have Control Panel set to "Classic View", you should see
an icon for Windows Firewall that you can click to configure it. If you
have Control Panel set to "Category View" click on "Security Center" and
you'll find the Windows Firewall icon at the bottom of the next screen.
