.NET Messenger Service

A little confusion here ... using WinXP Home ... frequently I receive a
little pop-up near my clock, indicating one of my MSN Contacts is on line,
although there is no indication on my screen or desktop that I am signed on
to any MSN Messenger type service ... when I sign on to MSN Messenger
service, I receive a pop up indicating ".Net Messenger Service" is closing
down, because I have signed on to MSN at another location (MSN Messenger
Service)...

What is ".NET Messenger Service" and how can I identify that I am signed on
to it?

Thanks!

SeaJay,

The .Net Messenger service uses Windows Messenger to log on to the MSN
Messenger service that you know and love. The MSN Messenger client that you
open signs on to the same MSN Messenger service.

So it appears that you have the Windows Messenger client running and I'm
guessing that it's hidden in your tray. Next to the clock where the icons
are, click the arrow facing towards the start button. There should be a
little blue Messenger icon there. Double click it to open it up. Then go
to the Tools menu and click the Preferences tab. Uncheck 'Run Windows
Messenger when Windows starts' and 'Allow Windows Messenger to run in the
background'.

This will make it so that Windows Messenger won't start up with your
computer and when you open MSN Messenger you won't get a 'signed in
elsewheree' notice.
