.net messenger service runs even when Messenger is closed?

Whenever I start MSN Messenger 6.1, I get a message telling me I'm being logged out of .net messenger because I logged in elsewhere. Also, even when MSN Messenger isn't running, I get popups alerting me when friends come online. I thought uninstalling all .net-related programs in Control Panel would take care of it, but it didn't

I don't want to receive these notifications unless I actually have Messenger running

What is logging me onto .net messenger service and how do I turn it off, please?

What's automatically logging you in is Windows Messenger, the built-in Messenger client that
comes with Windows XP. To stop it, open it up
(click Start, then Run, type "msmsgs" and click OK), click Tools, Options, Preferences tab
and uncheck 'Run this Program when Windows starts' or 'Run Windows Messenger when Windows
starts' (depending on version) as well as 'Allow this program to run in the background' or
'Allow Windows Messenger to run in the background' (depending on version).

Also, do you have Norton Antivirus installed? Recent versions of Norton Antivirus added a
new "instant messaging scanning" feature, which can conflict with Messenger and cause it to
also keep starting. To stop it, open Norton Antivirus (Right-click on the Norton Antivirus
icon in the System Tray/Notification Area (by the clock), choose 'Open Norton Antivirus'),
click Options, then Instant Messenger then uncheck MSN Instant Messenger and click OK.

Thanks very much, Jonathan! All of those things needed to be unchecked and no Norton on this machine so I'm sure that took care of it
