Net connection OK for short time then stops downloading data

Hi,

Months ago I downloaded XP updates relating to SP2.
Since then, I connect to the net with my 56k modem,
If I use p2p software edonkey/emule it will download for a
few mins then all downloading stops and unable to view web
pages.
Using Bearshare instead I can use the net between 24min &
1hour30min before data reciept stops.

If the internet connection is terminated & I re-connect,
data comes in again for between 24min & 1hour30min.

Broadband is coming to my village in 3 months, I hope I
get this problem sorted before then.
