Need XP Network setup Disk, but...

J

John

I'm in a uniquely ME situation. My old HP system is dying
fast- the CD-ROM is dead, and various other issues forced
me to just replace it. My new Dell has no floppy drive
(who knew I'd still need one?). Both have 10/100 Ethernet
cards, so I figured I'd setup a quick network to allow me
to transfer files from the old PC to the new PC. The old
system is W98 SE, the new is XP.

I need a network setup floppy disk to run on the old unit,
but my new system can't create one...and the new XP CD is
useless to the old system's dead CD-ROM. I've searched
online for a way to download the network setup disk, but
no luck. Anyone know how I can get it? If so, I can DL it
direct to the old system and copy it to floppy there.

Please Email me direct if you can help ([email protected]).

Thanks,

John

The easiest thing may be to yank out the old disk, make it a secondary
on the new machine, and copy away.

If you can identify the card in the old machine you and it's not
"NoName" you can probably d/l drivers but you may need the w/98 disk
to complete the network setup, If you don't have that you may be
screwed.

I've replied in the news group and by Email, as you requested, John.
If you reply to me, please do it in the news group only, not by Email.

You don't need to use the XP network setup disk, which is just a
convenience. You can make the settings manually.

Go to Control Panel | Network on the old computer and:

1. Install these network components if they're not already present:
a. Client for Microsoft Networks
b. TCP/IP
c. File and Printer Sharing for Microsoft Networks

2. Configure the local area network connection to obtain an IP
address automatically (TCP/IP->NIC | Properties).

3. Click the Identification tab and specify a computer name and
workgroup name. Use the same workgroup name that the XP computer
uses.

4. Click OK to exit.

5. Reboot.

6. Right click and share any desired disks and folders.
