Need internet connection help

My computer is connected to the internet using a wireless connection but to
play video games I need to hook it up with an ethernet cable. When I plug
the ethernet cable into the back of my computer and then into the modem (dsl)
my computer does not recognize the connection. Does anyone have any ideas on
how to fix it?

p.s. the cable works

What exactly do you mean, the computer does not recognise the connection?
Is the cable connection not detected or are you unable to connect to the
internet? Have you set up a wired connection with username and password?
Most DSL services require this.

the cord is hooked up to both the computer and the modem but I still can't get on the internet. When another ethernet cable is hooked up to the modem a flashing light comes up next to the port of the cord but this doesn't happen with the cord connected to my comp.

Then replace the cord. Are you sure that the ethernet card is actually
working, and is not set to disabled? Are you using the correct type of
ethernet card, that is, straight through as opposed to crossover?

Go to the device manager
(Right-click "MyComputer"->manage->Device Manager)
Check that a network adapter shows up for your wired ethernet port and
that it is enabled.
