Need Help with Syntax/Script Errors!

Lori

Okay, I've tried to do all of the obvious and nothing
seems to solve my problem involving the above error
messages. I'm using IE 6 (the latest with the patches and
updates installed) and on AOL I am unable to access any of
the hyperlink newslinks on the Welcome Page, nor am I able
to use ANY of the my.screenname.aol.com features which
include Weather Alerts, preferences, techhelp or any live
support. I am getting three different error messages, the
first window (Internet Explorer Script Error)
reads, "Syntax Error" with message asking, "do you want to
continue running scripts on this page?" (it doesn't matter
if I choose "yes" or "no") The second and third windows
appear (same subject, I.E. Script Error) which
read, "object expected" and listing which line and
characters had errors, again asking "do you want to
continue running scripts on this page"...and again,
doesn't matter which answer I choose, the same ending
result appears....a BLANK screen with "done" at the bottom
left indicating the page has finished loading. So far, I
have done the following to try and correct this irritating
problem to no avail: 1) Reinstalled the same version of
AOL that I am running, 6.0, in case there was a corrupt
file. 2) Updated the Internet Explorer to the latest
version and installed all patches and updates. 3)
Installed ALL Microsoft updates available for my operating
system (ME). 4) Went to a diagnostics/support news
article site (KBAlertz) and searched thousands of
Microsoft published articles on I.E. 6 problems and
solutions and found an article about script errors, which
led me to 5) Installing Java 5.6 script for IE 5.5 and 6
to possibly correct any corrupt IE files 6) Called AOL
techsuport and went through a zillion ridiculous (and
unnecessary) processes of deleting temporary internet
files and cookies (as IF, c'mon you eejits!) and other
STUPID PET TRICKS just to get a case number nine digits
long to remember and repeat to the next AOL techsupport
eejit who tries to run me through the SAME steps and adds
even more unrelated and unnecessary $&&(#W)(*_#$. PLEASE
HELP! I give myself an A++ for effort and REFUSE to stop
trying because I know I can DO this myself, just need a
little push in the right direction is all...I REFUSE to
take my PC into the shop and fork out $65/hour, that is
BENEATH me. Please respond if you have any WORTHWHILE and
RELEVANT advice, ok? Thanks SO much!! LS

I visited AOL.com and viewed the source code and there seems to be nothing
out of the ordinary. My browser in the ME environment loads it without
errors. There are conflicts with anti ad-ware that I am running and the
links to the weather etc. will not work unless I turn off the mal-ware
detection. Are you running any ad-blocking software (Google Toolbar ver 2
etc). I would not expect any ad-blocking software to cause any scripting
errors though.

Failing that as a simple solution try repairing your IE.
Select the Start=>Run menu and copy and paste the following into the Run
dialog

rundll32 setupwbv.dll,IE6Maintenance

choose the Repair option

Please reply on this thread with your eventual solution

Rob, you are truly a GENIUS! Your diagnosis of disabling
my pop-up ad eliminator (Ad-Subtract) worked like a charm
and resolved 99% of the problem...only thing I can't
access still is AOL Tech Support Live Help. I continue to
receive the message, "Sorry, you are not allowed to enter
America On Line Live Help". Any ideas why not? My next
phone call is to AOL Tech Support (again!). Thank you so
much for your time and assistance, from the bottom of my
frustrated little intenet heart! Lori )

Check your Security and Privacy settings in the Internet Options control
panel.
I suggest a medium setting for Privacy.
On the security tab, add aol.com to your trusted sites.

I checked the security level on my Internet Options, and
am running it at Medium. I tried to add the aol.com site
to my trusted sites, only it wouldn't let me saying that
it had to start with an "https" rather than a "http"
address. You wouldn't happen to know the correct security
address for aol.com, if there is one, would you? I tried
https/www.aol.com and that didn't work. Oh well...but
hey, I did call AOL and told them of my inability to
access Live Tech Help with my version of Windows and AOL,
and was told that there is definitely a known problem with
this and that my report is one of many received, they are
trying to solve the problem but currently they don't have
a solution. Thanks again {{{Rob}}}. I feel SO much
better tonight...sigh....
